Betting on Celebrity Marriages, Divorces (1 of 2)

In movies, a Hollywood ending is a happy ending. In real life, it is the exact opposite.

Did you hear the one about Britney Spears divorcing Kevin Federline, announced only last November 7? Meet two of Hollywood’s biggest excesses: getting married and getting divorced. Unfortunately for the sanctity of the holy matrimony, celebrities wed and split up faster and more times than Angelina Jolie can adopt third world babies, or Ms. Spears can procreate biological ones.

Still, fans and paparazzi are relentless in fussing over who’s popping the question next. At Bodog betting props, the odds are -130 that supermodel Kate Moss and Pete Doherty of Babyshambles/The Libertines will get married by February 28 next year, and -110 they won’t. Celebrity betting odds are +300 ‘Scary’ Spice Girl Mel B and Eddie Murphy will get married by November 30 this year, and -500 they won’t.

What are the chances? Who are splitting up next? For free betting picks, look to some authorities on the subject…

Famously Short-term Hollywood Marriages

Britney Spears to Jason Alexander. We wonder which lasted longer: her first marriage, or the gap between birthing and conceiving her first two kids. Britney and Jason turned their Las Vegas wedding on January 3, 2004, to a 55-hour union that ended on January 5. As it happens, she now wishes to sever from second hubbie K-Fed, whom she married two years ago, in September ‘04.

Jennifer Lopez to Cris Judd; to Ojani Onoa. She takes the cake in fickle-mindedness – just ask all her exes. J Lo’s first publicized marriage (she’s rumored to have had a previous secret marriage) was to Cuban-born waiter Ojani, which lasted a year, from ‘97 to ‘98. (And then she hired him for her resto, Madre’s; go figure.) She was married next to backup dancer Judd also for a year, from ‘01 to ‘02.

Angelina Jolie to Billy Bob Thornton. So much for donning on necklaced vials of one another’s blood, Angie and Billy made their union last for all of three years, from May 2000 to May 2003. Jolie’s penchant for professing love without apology began on her wedding day with first hubbie Jonny Lee Miller, when she showed up with the groom’s name painted in her blood on the back of her t-shirt.

Jessica Simpson to Nick Lachey. As a 22-year old virgin, Jess wedded Nick in October ‘02 and they lived happily ever in MTV reality TV show Newlyweds; but the season ended and so did they after four years, in June ‘06. Rumor has it she prefers Jackasses, what with having been linked to Johnny Knoxville, and Bam Margera before the splitup; as well as John Mayer and Dane Cook.

Drew Barrymore to Tom Green. After a string of spoof weddings-on-camera, one of Hollywood’s oddest couples tied the knot for real in July ‘01, and untied it after a year, in October ‘02. Green filed for divorce, for reasons we can probably chalk up to two disparate worlds (and not a la Romeo and Juliet either). We gather Drew is now engaged to four-year boyfriend Fabrizio Moretti of The Strokes.

Will Britney now steal Justin from Cameron? How much blood will Angelina donate to India for her love of Brad Pitt? And what’s the deal with all these formerly hot stars marrying their backup dancers? Make your bets today because a new celebrity couple is breaking up tomorrow. (Perhaps, Jen and Vince?)

Next up: doomed Hollywood romances and costly celebrity divorces.
