MAC College Football needs Good Quarterbacks
Mid – American Conference College Football is ready for the brand new 2006 NCAA College Football.
And no, there’s nothing ”MID” about it. However, some teams in the Mid – American Conference have one thing in common. THEY NEED GOOD QUARTERBACKS.
For example, the Miami Redhawks have produced some of the best quarterbacks the world of football has ever seen. The million dollar question in Oxford is who will be the next starting QB? Since 1999 Miami has receivedstellar quarterback play from Mike Bath, Ben Roethlisberger, and most recently, Josh Betts.
Entering into the fall, the torch looks to be passed to junior Mike Kokal. Kokal has not played much but has proved to be very mobile. He does not have the arm strength of his three predecessors though.
The Ohio Bobcats need to find a quarterback and quickly. Senior Austen Everson returns as the starter but could easily be replaced during fall practice. Everson completed just 47 percent of his passes for just over 1,100 yards, with 11 INTs and only 4 TDs.
The Bobcats finished dead last in the MAC in passing offense at 118.5 yards per game. Brad Bower, a transfer from Illinois, may be the guy who becomes the starting signal caller. Bower played two seasons for the Illini, starting four games, before transferring to Athens. At 6-2, 210-pounds, Bower is the better passer. Brandon Jones and Josh Febus will battle for the backup role.
As for the Ball State Cardinals, Joey Lynch returns as the starting quarterback after passing for over 1,800 yards and 18 TDs in 2005. A better word for his return may be ’survived.’ Lynch and the Cardinal quarterbacks suffered 43 sacks last season. Even with so much pressure, Lynch threw just 7 INTs and completed 63 percent of his passes.
BSU ranked No.93 last year in passing offense (189-yards per game) – that figure will be much higher this year. A #2 quarterback needs to be developed with Warren Suess and Zach Jones battling for the job. Highly recruited true freshman Nate Davis has a legitimate chance to win the backup role.
