A Cuban Maverick Who’s not From Cuba
Mark Cuban, the billionaire who owns the Dallas Mavericks, probably is the most recognized team owner in all of sports.
Yep, you read it right, and he follows his team like a groupie to the Backstreet Boys.
Cuban, (no, he’s not from Cuba) is a self-made Fortune 500 success story. He founded a dot-com empire and seems to always find gold in whatever business he pursues.
You can see that success with the Dallas Mavericks, a team, despite losing Steve Nash and Michael Finley, still is one of the better teams in the NBA. Hey, the Mavericks are the only team you can really call Pistons killers, and no other team in the NBA can say that.
The Pistons can’t seem to beat these Mavericks so far in the 2005-2006 NBA warfare as they were beaten by Dallas both in the pre-season and the regular season.
A lot questioned Mark Cuban when he let Steve Nash go to Phoenix, (Steve Nash played for Phoenix and became NBA MVP) he then got Jason Terry from Atlanta to replace Nash at the point and the Mavericks never looked back since.
This year, the Mavs’ are certainly looking good for yet another run at the NBA championship. Dirk Nowitzki, now the only remaining Maverick from the big three that included Nash and Finley, finds himself around an even more talented cavalry that includes Terry, Jerry Stackhouse and Keith Van Horn.
Jeezus… It is only in Dallas where you’ll see franchise players like Stackhouse and Van Horn play second fiddle to Cuban’s German superstar, Dirk Nowitzki.
Mark Cuban has the dough and he certainly spends them wisely to further improve what is turning out to be an NBA powerhouse team.
Mark Cuban said in an interview that among the other NBA players not playing for the Mavericks, he pays to watch Kobe Bryant and LeBron James play basketball. He said Kobe is just playing out of his mind lately and LeBron is just a special player who can do everything already.
What if both of these guys get that proverbial ‘Cuban call’ to play for the Mavericks? Jeez… The NBA better stop their silly tournament and start handing Mark the NBA championship every goddamn year.
