NASCAR’s ‘Talladega Nights’ Takes Checkered Flag At Box Office

Jimmie Johnson wins Allstate 400; Will Ferrell tops at the movies.

What a way for NASCAR Racing to enter its final stages with thrilling races and close finishes for coveted Nextel Cup Standings.

The Daytona 500 was sweet.

But for Jimmie Johnson who now finds himself in first place in Chase for the Cup, the Allstae 400 was a comeback victory for the books.

NASCAR Betting OddsMeanwhile, at the movie theaters this weekend Will Farrell, who plays a NASCAR driver, drives into first place at the box office with his fast-action flick, "Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby", which opened in theaters on Friday.

The movie easily lapped the competition over the  weekend, topping the box office with more than $47 million in ticket sales.

The comedy from Sony Pictures was the biggest-ever opening for Ferrell in a starring role.

This would make it the second-biggest opening by a non-sequel comedy, behind Bruce Almighty’s $68m (£36m) in 2003.

But one moviegoer is not amused. Ted Baehr, The Movieguide.org publisher said Ferrell’s "Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby" is "a racist, bigoted work that ridicules the Bible Belt, Southern white men, Christianity, Jesus Christ, the family, and American masculinity."

He said that "Talladega Nights" is one of the most "blasphemous, politically correct major movies ever released by a major Hollywood studio." He continued his rant, saying that Hollywood and the mainstream media stood by silently while Dan Brown and Ron Howard mocked Christian beliefs and Roman Catholic leaders in "The Da Vinci Code" and when Martin Scorsese claimed in "The Last Temptation of Christ" that Jesus was a "mixed-up" and "weak-minded" wimp.

Oh c’mon, you sore loser. the combination of Ferrell and NASCAR was sure to be a crowd pleaser. Don’t you know that fans camp out for days before a NASCAR race and turn it into an exciting event.
