Now Plumbers and Roofers Can Auction Themselves on Ebay
The biggest proponent of obesity is the Internet. We just don’t want to admit it.
The forces in cyberspace have formed galactic alliance to keep our fat asses glued to our seats, and our eyes to our computer screens, so we won’t have to move calf muscles to buy what stuff we want and book services that we need.
Three months ago Ebay signed a deal with Yahoo to expand its reach among US online users. The two Internet giants was to work together in areas of search and graphical advertising, online payments, a co-branded toolbar, and the opportunity to explore “click-to-call”functionality.
Today, Ebay signed another deal with Yahoo’s prime competitor, Google.
Basically the same banana but this time targetting non-US users. The new partners announced an advertising partnership Monday that aims to put buyers in touch with a wider variety of sellers, such as the neighborhood exterminator, math tutor or roofer. Under the arrangement, Google would provide search results whenever an eBay member typed in a search term that failed to find any matches on eBay’s vast auction site.
Of course, Ebay risk the chance of its users going out of the site into Google. But that’s no big deal. Although Ebay can provide us with results for computers to second hand diapers, it has failed to give us a list of plumbers in our neighborhood just when we’re too lazy to check out the Yellow Pages. Now this drawback will be filled by Google and Yahoo.
Plus, with their “click-to-call” feature these thoughtful Internet giants will also spare us of that very tedious task of reaching for the phone to dial the plumbers’ number and make inquiries. No dearies, click-to-call means click-to-call.
All you have to do is equip yourself with a VoiP and then lightly push an index finger to CLICK, and you’ll be directed to the customer service rep. In your case, the plumber’s newly-computer trained assistant.
This feature also finally puts into good use the billions of dollars Ebay paid for Sykes services.
The alliance between Google and Ebay, as it stands, is a bigger pork than the Yahoo deal. An old saying from the Chinese philosopher and general Sun Tzu could be applied to this: Keep your friends close and your enemies closer.
Because even after Yahoo and Ebay have celebrated their partnership there was always the threat of Google lurking over them. From Google’s standpoint, this deal is (just) one of many. For example, it already has similar deals with Dell Inc., News Corp.’s Fox Interactive, and Time Warner’s AOL.
So yeah, hooking up with the enemy is the most sane thing to be.
Now the next step is forcing small businesses to bring their trade online so growing Internet users too fat to move as far as the door can find them. And hopefully hire their services.
