Playboy Magazine is Indecent for Jakarta, Indonesia

Playboy magazine finally got to Jakarta, Indonesia.

Yup, apparently, Hugh Hefner‘s brainchild and America‘s favorite pages finally got across the border. The only problem is, they find the publication a little indecent.

Playboy magazine editor-in-chief and the very first centerfold model of Playboy magazine ”Indonesia edition” were formally named by the police in Jakarta as suspects in an indecency case against Playboy.

The woman who posed for Playboy Indonesia as the centerfold model in lingerie is Kartika Gunawan while the magazine’s editor-in-chief is Erwin Arnada. Both of them could be prosecuted, and if proven guilty, be put behind bars for two years and eight months.

When Playboy magazine got to Jakarta, Indonesia, it caused quite a stir in this predominantly Muslim nation of 220 million. The Muslims urged the publisher to relocate their offices away from Jakarta to the more liberal resort island of Bali.

This legal action against Playboy comes as a small, hard-line Islamic bloc in parliament is pushing a bill to ban art, culture and literature deemed erotic or offensive.

Opponents say the so-called anti-pornography legislation, which has drawn tens of thousands of demonstrators on both sides of the issue, would undermine Indonesia’s secular traditions.

Under Indonesian law, declaring someone a suspect is a formal step in a police procedure, indicating there is enough initial evidence to build a case for trial.

Arnada, a seasoned Indonesian journalist named as a suspect, could not be reached for comment.
