Seminoles will Try Weather Hurricanes in Football Again

The Florida State Seminoles are coming into this game against the Miami Hurricanes, with a great deal of momentum.

Oh yeah, those Hurricanes, after all, are STILL in shambles. Coming off its first national title and a 17-16 win at Tallahassee the year before, Miami Hurricanes head coach Jimmy Johnson’s first run-in with Florida State Seminoles head coach Bobby Bowden turned ugly for UM at the Orange Bowl.

Yep, at the Orange Bowl, the unfortunate Hurricanes may have suffered their second-worst loss all-time in the series. OUCH. Who would’ve thought that a Florida State Seminoles team, ranked 15th in the country at that time, would go on to inflate a 9-0 halftime lead and go all the way?

Well, not the University of Miami, that’s for sure.

The Miami Hurricanes were ranked 4th for crying out loud, but I guess the Seminoles forgot about that. And boy, did it worked for them good. Heck, the Hurricanes were ALMOST shut out at home for chrissakes. And the last time that happened to the University of Miami at the Orange Bowl was waaay back on Oct. 4, 1974, in a 3-0 loss to Auburn.

On Monday, the Seminoles will be hoping wide receiver Greg Carr propel them to the top and be able to weather the storm, weather the Hurricanes if you will, once again in NCAA College Football. Carr doesn’t catch a ton of balls in a game, but you can be guaranteed that he’ll catch a big one for a key first down or maybe a gamebreaking touchdown one way or another.

Determined to stop the Florida State wide receiver are Hurricanes corners, Glenn Sharpe and Randy Phillips. Sharpe and Phillips can’t get into a shoving match with Carr. If put in man coverage against him, they’ve got to get an initial jam and then run with him, leaving some space to not allow Carr to be able to push off and use that leverage to get free.

Carr won’t burn them with his speed, but he uses that inability to go deep against the corners by pushing off and working back to the ball, whether on a short out cut, curl route or deep out cut downfield. The key for Sharpe and Phillips is feet, be quick with the feet, be in position to play angles and don’t get tied up with the big fella downfield.

Um… Sounds like a lot of work for the Miami Hurricanes huh? He he… I won’t be surprised if the Florida State Seminoles make their way on top again against UM this Monday on the NCAA College Football field.

The Florida State Seminoles travel to Miami on Labor Day hoping to repeat last year’s Labor Day win over the Miami Hurricanes. Can the Seminoles beat the Hurricanes again or will the University of Miami avenge last year’s loss to Florida State? Here are the odds from Sports Interaction.

Florida State Seminoles +3.5 (-110)

Miami Hurricanes -3.5 (-110)

I have gone back and forth on who I would pick to win, but I decided to take Florida State. The Seminoles have the biggest playmakers and game-breakers. Miami probably has the better starting 22 from top to bottom, but big plays decide games of this magnitude. Lorenzo Booker on offense and Buster Davis on defense should be able to make enough plays to get the victory. Not to mention the Hurricanes have several injuries and suspensions to key players, I just can’t see Miami being able to muster enough firepower to pull this one out. As bad as Larry Coker needs this victory, I would have to argue Bobby Bowden needs it just as bad.
