The Star-Crossed Affair of Horse Racing and Slot Machines

The growth of race track casinos, or racinos, is inevitable. But not a welcomed one for many.

Horse racing and casino gaming, though both in the category of gambling, are strange bedfellows. Take for example the issue of the pending Anti-Online Gambling Bill. Our highly intellectual lawmakers insists that online casino gambling is illegal, not to metion immoral depending the level of your faith to the morals of society.

But betting on horse racing online isracetrack-casino-slots not included in the provisions. Main reason put forward is that horse racing is a sort of tradition with historical roots.

Plus we see our politicians waving their hats during horse races while they enter special entrances when going into casinos. Not that we’ve seen them do that, we’re just not stupid.

Now, many race tracks are complaining that they’re losing money because state officials would not allow them to install slot machines, which are great attractions at tracks nowadays.

The Lone Star State is one example of where horse racing is in do-or-die situation. That’s because neighboring states are luring bettors and horsemen to their tracks that offer Las Vegas-style gambling, mainly VDTs. The reason: lost revenue. It appears if Texas lawmakers don’t do something about it, the racing industry might not survive.

Some states that allowed VDTs in their tracks are Florida including Gulfstream Park, Pennsylvania, New Mexico, Louisiana, and Oklahoma.

So why is Texas resisting the sign of times? in a poll conducted among Texas residents 2 out 3 respondents say they are for VDTs so they can keep the money in Texas and not spend them in  other states. While 30 percent say they’re against it because “Gaming is a cancer on society."

Yeah, tell that to the American Indians. Maybe these heathens believe that eating fat greasy stakes can cause cancer, not some innocent slots game. But what do they know about morals like Christians do, right?

Anyway, many experts say that not heeding the gaming demands of modern racetrack goers is equivalent to suicide. The horse racing industry badly need the help of the lowly slots to keep it on its feet.

If you ask me, this issue has a better chance with your congressman than convincing them online gambling is really harmless. Why? because this is a bunch of old dudes who describe the Internet as "a series of tubes". While taking up the problem a race track, they don’t have to click anything to understand.

It’s as simple as ‘No money, no racing!’

The horse racing bosses are partly to blame for becoming dinosaurs. Even Hollywood found a way to make the Ice Age young again, surely it isn’t that hard.
