Can anyone tame the ‘’Tiger?'’

At the end of the day, Tiger WoodsTiger Woods stood alone, a champion.

In his first start of the 2006 PGA Tour season, the best golfer in the world showed exactly why he is just that, the very best.

This was Woods’ debut this season, his first victory since turning 30 last month.

With the tour off to a sluggish start with so few stars teeing it up in the first month, Woods’ winning the Buick Invitational is like a cannon shot announcing golf’s arrival.

It couldn’t come at a better time with the NFL taking a weekend off before next Sunday’s NFL Super Bowl at Detroit, Michigan.

The story here was how Woods almost never gives as good as he gets. It’s how Woods almost never gives away a tournament when he has a chance to win it. While Woods is capable of spectacular shot making, it isn’t his ability to consistently hit winning shots that makes him such a formidable champion. It’s how he consistently avoids hitting shots that lose tournaments.

Of course, he saved his best for when it mattered most. This guy simply doesn’t know how to lose. All Woods ever wants to know is what he has to do. He was flirting on top of the leaderboard and when it seems all hopes had faded for Woods, his rivals stumbled one-by-one. He overcame a seven-shot deficit over the final seven holes to win. In sudden death playoff, Woods won the title with two pars! What a lucky guy. Sometimes you have to be lucky to be great.

He is 47 victories and 10 major championships into a career that might just be blossoming into full bloom. He arrived on the professional scene a decade ago with the world expected of him and, remarkably, he has delivered it. This year, Woods wants more. When asked if he would change anything about his 2005 season, Woods smiled and said, "Win two more tournaments," meaning the U.S. Open and PGA Championship, both of which he nearly won.

It is a new year for the new thirtysomething. The fun is watching it unfold.
