WAC’s 2006 NCAA Football mission: Get a BCS automatic qualifying spot
The mission of WAC College Football.
No less than the commissioner of the Western Athletic Conference admitted WAC’s 2006 NCAA Football mission: “ The bottom half schools of the WAC needs to close the gap between itself and the top half.
Karl Benson says those schools need to spend more money. They need better facilities. They need, if it’s not too much trouble, to win. He would like the WAC team with the smallest budget to be at least half of the largest.
He was presumably talking about San Jose State Spartans, Utah State Aggies, Idaho Vandals and New Mexico State Aggies, which together last season won eight games and didn’t do as well in the other 37.
No matter how good the WAC becomes, it always will have four bottom teams. That’s how it works. It’s those nonconference games that are important, and in those, the four teams of which we do not speak went 2-11.
The goal is to pass the Big East and become a BCS automatic qualifying conference. The Big East is lagging, but Fresno State Bulldogs and Boise State Boncos can drag only so many anchors at a certain speed, and the current one isn’t fast enough.
It’s all because the BCS has come up with ways to give every Division I football team a shot at more of its big cash and prizes, as opposed to the old way where the Big Ten, Big 12, SEC, ACC, Pac-10 and Big East all feasted, then tossed the other five conferences $5 million in scraps to share.
Everyone is running the numbers and seeing where they stand and WAC, for one, is standing right behind its teams. With a bullwhip.
Could this be the year the Broncos go down? Having won the past four Western Athletic Conference football titles, the target on Boise State’s back has become huge. Now, with a new head coach in charge, some feel this could be the season the Broncos don’t finish on top.
If the Broncos are to be tamed in 2006, it doesn’t look like it will be an easy job.
