Wild MLB Night: Back-to-back-to-back-to-back

Four straight HRs in the ninth inning? Nomar Garciaparra’s winning shot in the 10th?

Yes, Monday night was crazy in L.A, as the Dodgers stunned San Diego to take back the NL West lead.

Nomar Garciaparra, crippled with two two-run walk-off home run in the bottom of the 10th inning Monday night for a stunning 11-10 Dodgers win over the Padres.

It was the seventh Dodgers home run of the game, and followed a walk to Kenny Lofton by San Diego reliever Nomar hits walk-off homerRudy Seanez, a former Dodger. The Padres had taken a 10-9 lead in the top of the 10th on Josh Bard’s RBI single off Aaron Sele.

With four consecutive home runs leading off the bottom of the ninth inning, two of them against Trevor Hoffman, the Dodgers erased a four-run deficit (for the second time in the game), and sent it into extra innings. Three of the home runs came on consecutive pitches. It was the fourth time a team had hit four consecutive home runs, and the first time since Minnesota in 1964.

The home runs were hit by Jeff Kent (his fourth hit) and J.D. Drew off Jon Adkins, then Russell Martin and Marlon Anderson off Hoffman. It was Anderson’s second homer and fifth hit of the game.

The last time a team hit four consecutive homers was on May 2, 1964, when the Minnesota Twins accomplished the feat against Kansas City in the 11th inning.

Three other teams had hit four straight home runs in one inning, all of them in a four-year span. The Milwaukee Braves did it in the seventh inning at Cincinnati on June 8, 1961 (Eddie Mathews, Hank Aaron, Joe Adcock, Frank Thomas), the Indians did it in the sixth inning against the Angels on July 31, 1963 (Woodie Held, Pedro Ramos, Tito Francona and Larry Brown) and the Twins did it in the 11th inning at Kansas City on May 2, 1964 (Tony Oliva, Bob Allison, Jimmie Hall and Harmon Killebrew).
