Canada, U.S. reach 2007 CONCACAF Gold Cup Semis
Well whaddaya’ know, North America can play some soccer after all.
Yep, hockey planet and NFL football country are playing some good soccer lately that Canada and the United States found themselves through the semifinals of the ongoing 2007 CONCACAF Gold Cup tournament.
Canada reached the semifinals after their 3-0 win over Guatemala over the weekend. Guatemala just couldn’t come up with anything as Canada started the scoring barrage when Dwayne De Rosario came up with the very first goal of the game in the 17th minute.
Then, Ali Gerba put Canada ahead for
good after scoring two goals, one in the 33rd minute and another in the 44th. Heck, Canada already had a commanding 3-0 lead and the game was not even through the halftime interval yet.
In the second half of the game, Canada was done scoring goals. What they intended to do then was stop Guatemala from scoring for the rest of the way. And they did exactly that. Canada tightened its defense in the second half against an already tired Guatemala side. Hell, the Canadian defense was so strong that goalie Pat Onstad didn’t even have to make one single save in the second.
The United States, on the other hand, reached the 2007 CONCACAF Gold Cup semifinals by beating Panama 2-1, the same day their North American counterparts made the trip thanks to Guatemala’s futile efforts.
This game ALMOST got away from the Americans. Already leading 2-0 with merely minutes before the final horn to end the fixture, Panama took advantage of what looked like an already relaxing American side, scoring a goal in the 84th minute, merely six minutes away from what should be an easy victory for the U.S., to cut the Americans’ lead to 2-1.
After Panama scored, U.S. head coach Bob Bradley almost got a heart attack. ‘’They scored and made the last two minutes crazy,'’ U.S. coach Bob Bradley said. ‘’That’s something we certainly will talk about.'’
He he… What a downer if the U.S. lost what should be an easy win over Panama eh? Good thing Panama just ran out of time. Whew!
