Joe Torre says no to the New York Yankees

My my, losing to a city like Cleveland sure was damaging to the Yankees.

Especially now that Joe Torre reportedly turned down a one-year contract offer from New York that will end what has been a colorful ‘Torre era’ in the Bronx.

You see, the Yankees, after Torre failed to lead them to the 2007 MLB World Series, getting eliminated by Cleveland in the first fucking round, offered the longtime Yankees manager a $5 million contract to keep him in New York for one more year.

Yep, that will still make Joe Torre the highest paid manager in MLB baseball. Joe TorreFor Torre however, he’ll still be taking a pay cut as the $5 million the New York Yankees are offering him would be $2.5 million less of what he made this 2007 MLB baseball season.

Of course, he turned it down. If you’re earning THAT much already, why in the hell would you agree to work for less? I guess after all the playoff failures the guy has been having the last few years, the New York Yankees no longer value him as high as they did before.

As expected, the New York Yankees management are disappointed that they probably lost a manager with almost a certain entry into the Hall of Fame for good. Well, that’s what they’re saying anyway.

”A difficult day,” New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said. ”He will always be a Yankee.”

Joe Torre just completed a three-year contract worth $19.2 million this season. The highest in the league. For some reason, the Chicago Cubs have the second highest paid manager in Lou Piniella at $3.5 million.

New York Yankees president Randy Levine thought that giving Joe Torre a pay cut would motivate him to have better results. C’mon, how screwed up is that guy?

”Under this offer, he would continue to be the highest-paid manager in major league baseball,” Randy Levine said. ”We thought that we need to go to a performance-based model, having nothing to do with Joe Torre’s character, integrity or ability. We just think it’s important to motivate people.”

Oh puh-lease… He knows that’s nothing but a big pile of bullshit.

Who will win the 2007 MLB World Series Championship? Bodog has the odds.

Boston Red Sox 13/2

Cleveland Indians 10/13

Colorado Rockies 6/5
