LSU Tigers, No.1 again in College Football BCS Rankings
And it continues to get crazy people.
This 2007 NCAA college football season has been a story of upsets and shockers and this week was no different. Yes, the Ohio State Buckeyes are no longer the No.1 team of the nation as they got blitzed by the Fighting Illini to win this year’s Illibuck and probably end their rival’s title hopes of a BCS national championship.
The annual ”battle for Illibuck” was on in Columbus and although the Ohio State Buckeyes were picked as the heavy favorites coming into this one, it was the Illinois Fighting Illini victorious, edging Ohio State, 28-21, to shock the college football world yet again.
”I know ’shock the world’ is overused,” Illinois Fighting Illini linebacker J Leman said. ”It is pretty shocking to most people, but not to the guys in the locker room.”
Yeah yeah yeah, the troops from Illinois are gloating and they should. After spoiling what was Ohio State’s perfect run all the way to the 2008 BCS national championship game, these guys know how and where to hurt their rivals where it hurts the most.
This was the first time the Illinois Fighting Illini had beaten a No.1 ranked team since 1956. This was also the first time Illinois did it away from home. Illinois ended Ohio State’s winning streak of 20 games in the Big Ten so you can just feel how sweet it was for the Fighting Illini.
The Ohio State Buckeyes were only two wins away from a second consecutive trip to the BCS national championship game. With the loss, they are now the second No.1 team to lose in this wild 2007 NCAA college football season.
THAT means, the LSU Tigers and the Oregon Ducks are now the two teams likely to face for this year’s BCS national championship game although I still don’t know why the undefeated Kansas Jayhawks haven’t reached the top two seats of this complicated college football hierarchy system yet.
