Real Madrid are the 2007 Spanish La Liga champions
And that’s all thanks to David Beckham… leaving the game.
It was the final fixture we’ll ever see David Beckham in a Real Madrid uniform (probably because you never really know what the Englishman will do these days…) as they went for the 2007 La Liga title with a win over Real Mallorca.
Nobody anticipated that Real Mallorca will hold a 1-0 advantage over Real Madrid with FC Barcelona already holding a commanding 4-0 lead over Gimnastic Tarragon. If those scores held up, that means FC Barcelona will be snatching the title away from Real Madrid and David Beckham will leave the Spanish La Liga as a miserable loser.
As it turns out, Real Madrid came
back from a 0-1 deficit at halftime to win Sunday’s fixture, 3-1. Despite Barcelona’s 5-1 trashing of Gimnastic Tarragon, the 2007 Spanish La Liga title went to Madrid for winning their head-to-head results with Barca.
Perhaps the most significant effect David Beckham had in this HUGE fixture was the very instant he left the game early in the second half for a virtual unknown, Jose Antonio Reyes. Real Madrid was STILL down 0-1 when David Beckham left the game. Jose Antonio Reyes then came up with a somewhat strange kick that saw the Mallorca keeper fumbling the ball through the net to give Madrid their first goal of the game.
After Mahamadou Diarra came up with a vicious header to put Real Madrid ahead for the first time all evening, it was Jose Antonio Reyes again, unleashing a ‘’SportsCenter-like'’ goal that sent the entire Real Madrid fans in the Spanish capital into a frenzy.
Heck, even Tom Cruise, (who was watching the game live but don’t know shit about international football…) got his ass up from his seat and was clapping as if he was undergoing another ‘’Oprah spell.'’
Tennis icon Rafael Nadal was watching the game live too but with Tom Cruise standing in between his wife Katie Holmes and ‘’Spice Girl'’ Victoria Beckham while shouting and applauding, acting like he knew a thing or two about soccer, the entire thing just stole the damn show.
Real Madrid are the 2007 Spanish La Liga champions and now, David Beckham can leave Spain in peace and go to Hollywood. Heck, with Tom-Kat as you’re welcoming party? How can you refuse right?
