Street Sense could miss the 2007 Belmont Stakes
Probably because the goddamn colt is still reeling over the way Curlin kicked his ass at Pimlico Race Course.
The 2007 Kentucky Derby champion, Street Sense, was working a half-mile jog at Churchill Downs. The colt looked good alright but his trainer, Carl Nafzger, still refuses to commit his colt to a rematch with the 2007 Preakness Stakes champ, Curlin, at Belmont Park on June 9.
The half-mile jog Street Sense completed a few days ago was the first strenuous workout since since he got his ass handed to him by Curlin at the Pimlico Race Course.
If Street Sense will opt out of the 2007 Belmont Stakes on June 9, then I guess it will just be a foot race between Curlin and Hard Spun.
Hard Spun finished second in the Derby before finishing third in the Preakness.
‘’Carl’s got him on the right track,'’ Street Sense’s jockey Calvin Borel said. ‘’It’s up to Carl now. He told me what to do with him this morning, and I did what he wanted. We’re just going to go from here. He’s as good as before, or better.'’
Yeah right. Every goddamn jockey tells that about his horse.
Carl Nafzger said he intended to handle Street Sense cautiously in the hope of winning the Travers Stakes in August at Saratoga Race Course and the Breeders’ Cup Classic in October at Monmouth Park in New Jersey.
Well, for what it’s worth, Carl Nafzger says the decision to put Street Sense in the 2007 Belmont Stakes for it’s 139th offering will be up to the colt’s owner Jim Tafel (of course…) and not him.
‘’There’s something about this horse, he’s a fast work horse,'’ Nafzger said. ‘’That makes Mr. Tafel’s decision harder. All I have to do is fill him in on where we’re at.'’
