Will Oscar Follow The Beaten Path And Become Just Another Awards Show?
And so we now sit back and wait for the Oscar Awards.
With the Golden Globes and Screen Actors’ Guild already done with their choices for the top acting honors, and yeah they’re the same set of people — Jennifer Hudson, Eddie Murphy, Helen Mirren and Forest Whitaker — are we waiting for the Oscars just to get it over with?
I mean every online sportsbook Oscar odds are now favoring these four to take home the golden statuette, so will we slouch on our couch for three or so hours just waiting for the result that we already know.
At last year’s Globes, all major acting winners for were mirrored by the Oscars: Rachel Weiss (Best Supporting Actress), George Clooney (Best Supporting Actor), Reese Witherspoon (Best Actress), and Philip Seymour Hoffman (Best Actor).
The SAG got 3 out of 4, Paul Giamatti stole the Actor from George.
The only battle left come the Oscars, it seems, is on the Best Picture Category. Remember last year when all gay equality hopes were shattered when Crash outwon Brokeback Mountain? This year, however, the battlefield is levelled as no film can claim to be a clear winner. All nominated films have equal chances of snagging the honors.
But will it be the same this year? Many awards show watchers already anticipate the same names being called to the stage and giving the same speeches thanking the same list of people.
Since other major awards give out theirs before the big Oscar day, we already know who will be winning the statuette, which is literally outweighed by the SAG trophy BTW. If this cycle goes on, the Oscars risk being tagged as just another movie award giving body.
On the other hand, if Oscar voters decide to go for less popular decision, they will be dubbed as snubs just for the sake of going a different way.
Which in my opinion would be better, actually. I hope they all sit down to seriously review all the nominees and give the award to those who really deserve it. Instead of just walking the beaten path.
Because seriously, Eddie Murphy as Best Supporting Actor? I’ve seen enough clip of Dreamgirls to know that if you close your eyes, you can see Donkey playing a part on that film.
So please Oscar voters, give us the real deal.
