2008 Fiesta Bowl: Oklahoma V West Virginia
BOOMER SOONER people. That will be the theme of the day once it’s time to FIESTA.
Yep, on Jan.2, the 2008 Tostitos Fiesta Bowl will be decided between the Oklahoma Sooners and the West Virginia Mountaineers. You just know that this one should and WILL be all Oklahoma because of two reasons.
ONE, the Mountaineers ain’t a WAC team that can shock the Oklahoma Sooners yet again in a FIESTA, (HINT: Boise State) and two, the Mountaineers are probably still reeling after blowing that chance to play in the BCS national championship game.
The West Virginia Mountaineers had the trip to the 2008 BCS national championship game in the bag, all they had to do was beat their rivals, Pittsburgh Panthers, and they’re there. Unfortunately for them, they lost their last game of the regular season to Pittsburgh, 13-9, and just like that, all their BCS national title hopes faded.
Despite finishing the regular season at 10-2, winning the Big East title for the fourth time in the past five years, West Virginia failed to earn the trip to the 2008 BCS national championship game because of the BCS’ rather controversial ranking system. If it’s any consolation for the Mountaineers, they did earn their second appearance in the Fiesta Bowl and the only thing they can do now is end this campaign with a win over powerhouse Oklahoma.
The Oklahoma Sooners, on the other hand, finished 11-2 and won the Big 12 Conference championship to earn its fifth conference title and sixth trip to a BCS bowl game. The Oklahoma Sooners will be making their fourth appearance in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl, their second consecutive, and they should be the heavy favorites to have a FIESTA when the smoke clears.
The West Virginia Mountaineers enter the game ranked No.9 in the BCS, No.9 in the Harris Interactive Poll and No.9 in the USA Today poll. The Oklahoma Sooners come in the Fiesta Bowl ranked No.4 in the BCS, No.3 in the Harris Interactive Poll and No.3 in the USA Today poll.
The West Virginia Mountaineers and the Oklahoma Sooners meet for the fourth time in their history with the Oklahoma Sooners leading the series, 2-1. The West Virginia Mountaineers won their most recent meeting, 41-27, on Sept.11, 1982 while Oklahoma won 52-10 on Sept.16, 1978 and 47-14 on Sept.27, 1958.
