2008 March Madness bracket is starting to take shape

seth-edward-oneal.jpgVarious teams are becoming ‘’locks'’ if you will as we inch closer to this year’s bracket wars.

And by ‘’bracket wars'’ we mean the 2008 March Madness bracket tournament. With ‘’Championship Week'’ here, this thing called ‘’Selection Sunday,'’ the day when college hoops choose which teams should be in this year’s tournament, is upon us and these teams are really starting to make a case for themselves why they should get the invite.

Let’s start with the real mecca of college basketball, the ACC conference. Coming from this group, the North Carolina Tar Heels should be the team to beat after capturing the ACC championship last Saturday when they beat the Duke Blue Devils, 76-68.

Tyler HansbroughUNC star Tyler Hansbrough dropped a double-double of 16 points and 15 rebounds, leading the Tar Heels to a win over the Duke Blue Devils at the hostile Cameron Indoor Stadium.

The Clemson Tigers and the Miami Hurricanes round up the ACC and just because we feel sorry for the Duke Blue Devils when the Heels humiliated them on their home floor last Saturday, we still count Duke as one of the ACC teams you can bet on for the tournament in March.

As for other teams that should get the invite for March. Here they are.

From the Big East, teams like the Georgetown Hoyas, the UConn Huskies, the Louisville Cardinals and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish should earn March Madness spots. The team to beat here should still be Georgetown.

The most likely scenario right now is that seven or eight bids will remain, assuming two or three of those teams won’t win their respective conference tourneys.

From the remaining teams, Arizona, Arizona State, UMass, Arkansas, Texas A&M and Kentucky look to be best-positioned right now, but most of those teams face extremely important quarterfinal games in their conference tourneys, so that picture could change in a hurry.

Who will win the 2007-08 NCAA College Basketball Championship? Sportsbetting.com has the odds.

North Carolina Tar Heels 6-1

UCLA Bruins 9-2

Memphis Tigers 6-1

Duke Blue Devils 9-1

Ohio State Buckeyes 100-1

Florida Gators 100-1
