2008 NCAA College Football Week 12 Betting Picks
Week 12 in college football continues.
You read it, the 12th week of the 2008 NCAA college football season continues this weekend with a whole bunch of good games beginning with the No.1 team of the nation, Alabama.
The Alabama Crimson Tide look to remain perfect and on track for a spot in the BCS title game while trying to avoid a third consecutive loss to visiting Mississippi State Bulldogs this Saturday. A season after finishing 7-6 and second-to-last in the SEC West Division, Alabama (10-0, 6-0) clinched its first division title since 1999 with an emotional 27-21 overtime victory at LSU last Saturday. The win kept the Tide atop the national rankings and BCS standings, ahead of fellow unbeaten Texas Tech.
Alabama will try to avenge losses to
Mississippi State (3-6, 1-4) and struggling Auburn, both at home, before facing Florida in the SEC title game Dec.6 in Atlanta. Alabama lost 17-12 at Mississippi State last season after falling 24-16 at home to the Bulldogs in 2006. The Tide has not scored an offensive touchdown in its last three meetings with the Bulldogs, including a 17-0 victory in 2005.
I have a feeling things will be a little different come gameday.
The fourth-ranked Texas Longhorns look to improve their chances of competing for the conference title when they visit the struggling Kansas Jayhawks next. Three straight wins over teams ranked No.11 or better gave Texas (9-1, 5-1) control of its own destiny at the end of October. However, a 39-33 loss to then No.6 Texas Tech with 1 second remaining last Nov.1 was a crushing blow to the Longhorns’ national championship aspirations.
No matter what the Longhorns do the rest of the season, they probably won’t get a chance to play for the national title or even the Big 12 championship. Why? Undefeated Texas Tech, which is idle this week before facing No.5 Oklahoma and Baylor in its last two regular-season games, has the edge in both races.
Texas, though, is still looking to do its part to stay alive, and the next step is avoiding an upset against the struggling Jayhawks. And since they’re playing for a BCS championship spot, a bet on the Longhorns looks good.
Next, we have the No.3 Florida Gators looking to avoid a loss in their three remaining regular season games. They’ll look to continue their recent dominance Saturday when they host former Florida coach Steve Spurrier and his new team, the No.23 ranked South Carolina Gamecocks, a team trying to win for the seventh time in eight games.
The Florida Gators (8-1, 6-1) won the SEC East for the second time in three years with a 42-14 victory over Vanderbilt last Saturday. The Gators will play No.1 Alabama in the SEC championship game in Atlanta on Dec.6, but that match-up will have a lot more significance if Florida arrives at the Georgia Dome with three more wins under its belt.
