2008 NFL Football Week 6 Betting Picks and Tips
It’s the trading deadline, hopefully, trading here will be waaay much better than the fucked up stuff we have in the stock market today.
The 2008-09 NFL football season resumes this Sunday with Week 6 and after five weeks, we learned that the Washington Redskins want a title, Matt Cassel can throw to Randy Moss after all and Sage Rosenfels is a dumbass.
Coming to Week 6, we have quite a few good games for you as always. Starting with this game between two of the hottest teams in the league. Would you believe it? The Chicago Bears and the Atlanta Falcons are winning. Go figure. The Bears won their last two games to find themselves atop the NFC North. They managed to beat the Eagles before routing the Lions last Sunday to end up at 3-2. But as impressive as that has been for Chicago, the Falcons have done better.
Falcons runningback Michael Turner has been having one heckuva’ season, leaving football fantasy owners scratching their heads. He already has six rushing touchdowns at this point of the season, making him the best halfback in the game today and I have a feeling the Bears defense won’t be able to stop him.
Pick the Atlanta Falcons to win by three.
Next, we have the struggling 2-2 Indianapolis Colts. The Colts don’t look as impressive as they were the last few seasons and while their running game continues to struggle this year, they could’ve been easily sitting at a miserable 0-4 mark. It doesn’t get any easier for the Colts too as they have to play the Baltimore Ravens next, a team hungry for a win after dropping their last two contests. Luckily for the Colts, Joe Flacco will still be running the Ravens offense and that, with all due respect to the young undrafted rookie, should give the Colts an easier time in figuring out how to stop a guy who can’t throw the ball.
Pick the Indianapolis Colts to win by seven.
The Carolina Panthers visit this year’s home of Super Bowl XLIII as they take on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Raymond James Stadium. The Bucs have been letting two veterans of the game run Jon Gruden’s offense, Brian Griese and Jeff Garcia, and against Tampa, Gruden figured Garcia, for some reason, will give him a better opportunity to win against Carolina. Garcia has been inactive since getting benched following the Sept.7 season opener at New Orleans. He was the backup Sunday in Denver and entered the game in the second half to lead the Bucs on a 90-yard touchdown drive.
And while the Tampa Bay Buccaneers continue to pin their hopes on yesterday’s heroes, the Panthers have already taken a step towards the future with the emergence of their second-year defensive end Charles Johnson. Johnson, who backs up left defensive end Tyler Prayton and plays primarily on passing downs, had one sack and was robbed of another when officials ruled one play an incompletion in Carolina’s 34-0 win over Kansas City last Sunday.
I’m not expecting old farts like Garcia and Griese outrun a young big guy like him. Carolina Panthers by three.
The struggling Cincinnati Bengals are next, trying to get their first win of the season against the New York Jets. The Bengals are at a dismal 7-14 in their last 21 games, 0-5 this season and at this point, this team is really not going anywhere with the current make-up they have now. There are rumors that claim that the Bengals front office are just waiting for Bengals coach Marvin Lewis to step down, hoping that when Lewis does, they can finally get their season going on the right track. Against the Jets however, I don’t think Cincinnati will turn things around this week since the last time these Jets were on the field, Brett Favre went berserk, throwing six touchdowns to blow Arizona away 56-35.
Our pick? Easy. New York Jets by a touchdown.
Two of the high-flying offenses in the league go head-to-head as the Dallas Cowboys take on the Arizona Cardinals. Last Sunday, Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo threw three touchdown passes in a 31-22 win over Cincinnati and although the Dallas’ passing game was hit or miss much of the day, they still managed to survive and win the game. Can the Cardinals pull off an upset over Dallas? Not if Anquan Boldin, who is ruled out for their Week 6 game, can’t play. Besides, Romo has been having this streak of games with an interception and I reckon he’ll be focused NOT TO THROW ANOTHER PICK this Sunday in Arizona.
Dallas Cowboys by two touchdowns.
Next, two struggling teams will try to get their season going as the 2-3 Minnesota Vikings host the 0-4 Detroit Lions. If it wasn’t for Panthers wideout Steve Smith fucking things up for his team in his debut and a weird Monday Night Football game in New Orleans, the Vikings could’ve been easily at 0-5. We have yet to see the dominant performance we normally get from Vikings runningback Adrian Peterson that made him such a hot commodity in football fantasy leagues. Luckily, the Lions, who just got blindsided by Kyle Orton of all people last week, will play them next, giving every opportunity for Peterson and the Vikings to finally get their season where it’s suppose to be.
Minnesota Vikings by seven.
The Green Bay Packers are pitted against the Seattle Seahawks next as the Pack tries to regain some momentum after their loss to Atlanta last week. Despite playing with an injury, Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers had one of his better performances this season, completing 25 of 37 passes for 313 yards and three touchdowns in a 27-24 loss to the birds. And against the struggling Seahawks who are probably kicking themselves after letting Shaun Alexander go a few months ago, I’m expecting Rodgers to get even more comfortable with the offense he inherited from Brett Favre.
Green Bay Packers by a touchdown.
The 2-3 Jacksonville Jaguars are slated to play the 4-1 Denver Broncos next in a game between two of the hottest teams in the league right now. Both teams have impressive passing games this season with Mike Walker and Matt Jones getting things done for Jacksonville while Eddie Royal and Tony Scheffler, with quarterback Jay Cutler leading the way, are quickly becoming one of the most explosive teams in the AFC. However, the Jaguars still have an advantage against Denver this week, their control game (yes, the one they used against Peyton Manning where they simply extended their possessions, refusing to give up the football to the Colts offense…) and their two-headed monster on the ground in Fred Taylor and Maurice Jones-Drew.
And since Eddie Royal is ruled inactive for Denver this week, we’re picking the Jacksonville Jaguars to win this one on the ground by three.
After five weeks into the season, the Miami Dolphins have started to win. They are coming off back-to-back wins against the powerhouse teams from the AFC, winning against the Patriots before beating the Chargers last Sunday. This two-game winning streak catapulted Miami to .500 after dropping their first two games of the season. They have the Houston Texans next, the same team that blew a 17-point lead to the Colts with only four minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. And in a game between two of the most laughable football teams in the league today, we’ll be making history because we actually like Miami to win a sporting event. How about that.
Miami Dolphins by three.
The Oakland Raiders, under new head coach Tom Cable, will have a chance to show Al Davis how will he run his team this Sunday but since they’re facing off against a tough NFC opponent in the New Orleans Saints, I have a feeling it won’t be that too much of a difference from what Lane Kiffin has done. And after New Orleans made a ton of mistakes last Monday night, getting flagged for a grand total 13 times, I’m expecting the Saints to be fully focused on hurting Oakland some more without committing any of the mistakes they did against the Vikes.
New Orleans Saints by two touchdowns.
The Philadelphia Eagles are once again facing the prospect of playing without runningback Brian Westbrook for Sunday’s important game against the San Francisco 49ers. Westbrook fractured two ribs in Sunday’s loss to the Washington Redskins. He hasn’t been ruled out of this week’s game against San Francisco yet but it seems unlikely he’ll play at this point. Luckily for Philly, they still have Donovan McNabb and if the NFC East is really the best division in football today, then there shouldn’t be any problems for Philly in taking care of business in San Francisco.
Pick the Philadelphia Eagles to win by seven.
Speaking of the NFC East, the hottest team in that division will be playing this weekend as the 4-1 Washington Redskins welcome the struggling St. Louis Rams, a team still looking for their first win of the season. After a tumultuous week that began with the firing of Rams head coach Scott Linehan, the Rams are looking to start winning games this Sunday in Washington under a new regime. Unfortunately, it doesn’t get any easier for St. Louis because after visiting the red hot Redskins, they have Dallas and New England next and I have a feeling these guys will still be winless then.
Washington Redskins by two touchdowns.
The New England Patriots return to primetime for the first time this season but without the face of their franchise, Tom Brady, as the Pats play the San Diego Chargers on this week’s edition of Sunday Night Football.
The New England Patriots got back on track last Sunday with a critical 30-21 win over San Francisco, two weeks after suffering a loss to Miami. They have the San Diego Chargers next, a team that was suppose to be a trendy pick to be a Super Bowl participant, but instead of looking the part, they are still two games behind the first-place Broncos and can’t trail by much more with a demanding slate of games awaiting; New England, at Buffalo and against the Saints in London. This is a tricky game to pick since we saw both teams act indifferently to what we anticipated with Cassel throwing a touchdown to Randy Moss and San Diego losing to what was suppose to be a fucked-up team like Miami. If the same two teams we saw last Sunday will come out and play this weekend, we’re picking the Patriots.
New England Patriots by three. (Puh-lease Randy, gimme’ the fantasy points I drafted you for dammit…)
Stand up, clap and believe, because the team many thought just got lucky to win the Super Bowl is now the most dominant team in the league today. The 4-0 New York Giants are coming to Cleveland on Monday Night Football as the most dominant team in the league today will face-off with one of the most pathetic ones.
It’s the defending champs against the Cleveland Browns and to make matters worse for the Dawg Pound, Giants wideout Plaxico Burress will be back for this one. Since giving the Patriots a scare in their last regular season game of 2007, the Giants haven’t skipped a beat since. They won all four playoff games to win the Super Bowl before winning the first four games of the new season. And in case you haven’t guessed it yet, Cleveland won’t even stand a chance.
New York Giants by two touchdowns.
