The City of Brotherly Love finally had their first ArenaBowl championship.

You read it, for a town with a namesake ‘’the city of brotherly love'’, and a team with a moniker that goes something as simple as ‘’Soul'’, Philadelphia winning its first Arena Football championship in ArenaBowl XXII was fitting after the dream season they just had.

The Philadelphia Soul became the winningnest team of the season, facing the defending ArenaBowl champions San Jose SaberCats behind backup Matt D’Orazio who was activated after starting QB Tony Graziani went down with an injury.

He had no idea that he will cap off an MVP season by leading his Soul to the ArenaBowl championship, beating the San Jose SaberCats 59-56. Yup, and I got to reiterate the fact that in only his second ArenaBowl game in three years, he wasn’t too bad at all.

Matt D’Orazio threw seven touchdown passes and ran for another score to lead the Philadelphia Soul to its first ArenaBowl title. Philly scored on all six of its first-half possessions, taking the lead for good with three straight TDs in the second quarter.

The San Jose SaberCats came up with a late rally in the final minute but fortunately to the Soul, they managed to hold on and win it all.

‘’I just really wanted to have fun and keep a smile on my face the whole game and enjoy this,'’ Matt D’Orazio said. ‘’Not everyone gets to do this, and I did.'’ He did it alright, and it was only fitting that he was the MVP of ArenaBowl XXII after the performance that he just had.

The SaberCats, with the loss to Philly, failed to become the league’s first re-peat champion since Tampa Bay in the 1995-96 season. This was also their ONLY loss in four of their appearances to the AFL championship game.

‘’Absolutely this stings,'’ San Jose SaberCats head coach Darren Arbet said. ‘’We came here expecting to win the game.'’
