Baylor Bears, Connecticut Huskies meet in NCAA Jungle
And on Friday, the 2008 NCAA college football season will be just that when the Bears and the Huskies go all out to win what is shaping up to be an important Week 4 face-off.
The Baylor Bears, after losing their first game of the season, came back with back-to-back wins over Northwestern State and Washington State to escape what could’ve been a disastrous start to the season.
The Connecticut Huskies, on the other hand, are still surprising everybody with their perfect 3-0 start on the college gridiron. Known predominantly as a very good basketball program, doing this good so far on that football field is shocking, to say the least, even to themselves.
The Huskies are known for winning NCAA championships in men’s and women’s basketball, but they’ve proven that they can also play football this season. In just their sixth year of Division I football, the Huskies were Big East co-champions with West Virginia last season.
Following a 9-4 finish and a trip to the Meineke Car Care Bowl, they have opened the season with three home games. However, the Huskies will face a daunting task when they play host Friday night at Rentschler Field in East Hartford against the Baylor Bears, who are looking for their third straight win after the humiliation they got against the Demon Deacons in Week 1.
For what it’s worth, the Huskies have guys like Donald Brown, who is an early candidate for Player of the Year honors, to go with a defense that has only given up one garbage time touchdown in 180 minutes of action.
In freshman quarterback Robert Griffin, the Huskies have a fast quarterback in a spread offense designed to let him use his athleticism to make things happen. In a lot of ways, he looks like a Midwest version of Pat White.
Baylor, however, is a challenging team to play in a non conference game. They are the kind of squad that has given the Huskies problems in recent years.
The Bears are coming off a pair of blowout wins over Northwestern State and Washington State, but coach Art Briles knows playing on the road is a whole different animal. It is no secret that the Bears will have to contain running back Donald Brown to have a chance to beat the Huskies on the road. Brown is the nation’s second-leading rusher with 566 yards and eight touchdowns through three games, including a 206-yard, three-touchdown performance in last week’s 45-10 pounding of Virginia.
It’ll be hard to take Brown off his game Friday night.
