Brigham Young Cougars look to stay perfect vs Aggies

seth-edward-oneal.jpgPerfection will be on the line Friday.

And while we’ve all heard our fair share of perfection in the NFL, the 2008 NCAA college football season also has teams looking to stay undefeated, each hoping for a BCS national championship in January.

On Friday, the 5-0 Brigham Young Cougars will be one of those teams looking to stay perfect as they meet the struggling Utah State Aggies this Friday on that college gridiron.

The early success the Brigham Young Cougars have been having on that field can be attributed to redshirt junior Max Hall, together with their high-powered offense and stingy defense. Following a controversial one-point win over Washington on Sept. 6, BYU answered its doubters with a stunning AND convincing 59-0 victory over UCLA the following Saturday.

BYU CougarsThat was the third-biggest shutout victory in Brigham Young history, coming against a team that was ranked a week earlier. BYU again dominated from the outset after they forced Wyoming to commit six turnovers, returning two for touchdowns in a 44-0 pounding of the Cowboys.

BYU, which has consecutive shutouts for the first time in 23 years, is 14-0 since a 55-47 loss to Tulsa on Sept. 15, 2007 and this eighth-ranked Cougars team will look to extend the nation’s longest winning streak to 15 games.

And just like what I stated, Hall is among the biggest reasons for BYU’s early success. The redshirt junior has thrown for 1,284 yards and 15 touchdowns in four games, tying the school record with seven TDs against UCLA. He has completed 107 of 144 passes (74 percent) with only two interceptions.

Hall has plenty of weapons at his disposal, notably tight end Dennis Pitta, Hall’s brother-in-law, who has 29 catches for 432 yards and three touchdowns. Receiver Austin Collie leads the team with 30 receptions and five TDs while running back Harvey Unga is averaging nearly five yards per carry.

In case you haven’t guessed it yet, Utah State doesn’t even stand a chance.
