Can Matt Leinart carry the Arizona Cardinals to win?
Hey, at least these guys have began believing.
After winning their first preseason game before the 2008-09 NFL football season officially begins, the Cardinals have earned the right to start believing in themselves, earning the license if you will, to be optimistic after years of turmoil within the organization.
You read it, the Arizona Cardinals, after earing their first preseason win over the Chiefs in Kansas City, have began believing that they just might have what it takes to be a legitimate contender in the NFC West.
Hey, since that division will
probably be the weakest one coming into the regular season, this is probably the perfect time for the Cardinals to make bold statements while they can. And since they now have two solid quarterbacks trying to outdo one another, resulting to a 27-17 win over the Kansas City Chiefs, we can’t really blame these guys for being this naïve early into the football calendar right?
Kurt Warner, Arizona’s 11-year veteran, is still trying to win the Cardinals’ no.1 quarterback spot. He started against the Chiefs, hitting six of nine passes for 54 yards, including a drive in the first quarter that set-up a Cardinals touchdown. Not bad for an old fart trying to keep his job in the NFL eh?
The problem is, his replacement has done one better.
Former USC Trojans standout, Matt Leinart, hit seven of 11 passes for 62 yards and one touchdown. Despite a rocky start, Leinart redeemed himself during the game after connecting with Steve Breaston for a 14-yard touchdown that put his team ahead 13-6 early in the second half.
Was it enough to award Leinart the no.1 QB spot for the rest of the coming season? One thing’s for sure, the Cardinals are now lucky to have both guys playing for them, giving them a brighter outlook of the days ahead.
‘’They both conducted drives that scored, which I thought was important,'’ Arizona Cardinals head coach Ken Whisenhunt, who didn’t play Warner at all in last week’s game against New Orleans, said.
‘’On the surface, I would say they both played well. The best thing about it today is to win on the road.'’
