Can the New York Giants win Super Bowl XLII?

You read it right, the Giants are in the Super Bowl. And what’s even more surprising is the fact that Eli led them to get here.

The New York Giants EARNED their Super Bowl XLII ticket after shocking the world for two straight weekends, beating NFC powerhouse No.1 Dallas Cowboys in the divisional round in one weekend and eliminating NFC powerhouse No.2 Green Bay Packers in the NFC championship game the following Sunday.

These New York Giants earned the spot to play the still perfect Patriots in the big dance, Super Bowl XLII in Glendale, Arizona. And while the Giants are probably feeling good about themselves to finally get here after a sub-par start to the season, the rest of us know that these guys will just get their asses creamed by New England.

Eli ManningSTILL, there’s that possibility that the Giants may have what it takes to shock us for the third straight time and actually beat the New England Patriots. After beating Dallas, then Green Bay, hell, New England may be next.

The Giants defense has just been terrific. It made Tony Romo’s life a living hell in the divisional round and it was able to pressure Brett Favre in the NFC title game so good that the guy is contemplating about retirement again.

Yes, defense is the key coming to their Super Bowl XLII match-up with the New England Patriots. But to the Giants, the key is simply redemption.

A year ago, when the New York Giants retained head coach Tom Coughlin despite that season’s disappointing finish, John Mara, the team president and co-owner, heard about it from disgruntled fans. Outside the Giants Stadium offices, it was not a popular decision.

After Eli Manning led the Giants to beat the Green Bay Packers, 23-20 in an overtime win to capture the 2008 NFC title, Coughlin stood amid a chaotic visitors locker room at Lambeau Field wearing a hat pronouncing the Giants as the National Football Conference champions. Mara tried to blend in with a wall. The Giants had just defeated the Packers, 23-20, in overtime, and Mara admitted to experiencing a quiet feeling of redemption.

Maybe the New York Giants finally got what they wanted, to be loved by New York again. Maybe they’re happy just to be here because beating the New England Patriots at Super Bowl XLII is entirely a different thing. Can they win it? Don’t bet on it.
