Deals and moves that went down in 2008 NBA Draft

seth-edward-oneal.jpgA lot of guys in diapers got drafted, that’s what.

The 2008 NBA Draft set a record for most number of freshmen drafted in the first round. Last year’s draft set that very record before we saw NBA teams do one better last Thursday night.

And as expected, Derrick Rose was drafted by his hometown team, the Chicago Bulls as the overall No.1 draft pick. The freshman point guard from Memphis was regarded by many as the most talented draft prospect this year and the Bulls wasted no time in taking him.

The problem now is, Derrick Rosethe Chicago Bulls have somewhat of a situation at the guard spot. With probably two of the Bulls’ best players, that being Kirk Hinrich and Ben Gordon, playing the same position as their newly acquired talent, something has got to give. I guess we’ll find out soon enough eh?

Kansas State freshman forward Michael Beasley was taken by the Miami Heat as the overall No.2 pick. After letting Shaquille O’Neal move to Phoenix, the Heat are probably hoping Beasley will be able to fill that big void. But since they are still the pathetic Miami Heat, I’m not betting on these morons to win more games than they have last season.

USC freshman O.J. Mayo, the guy dubbed by NBA pundits as the draftee most ready for the NBA, was taken by the Minnesota Timberwolves at No.3 overall. Keep your eyes glued on this guy because I have this feeling that the Wolves pulled of the best move in the draft.

As for other transactions that transpired in the draft, the New Jersey Nets have finally made it clear who they want to rebuild their franchise with. After letting Jason Kidd go to Dallas last season, they traded Richard Jefferson to the Milwaukee Bucks in exchange for Yi Jianlian and Bobby Simmons on draft night.

That means the New Jersey Nets now solely belongs to Vince Carter. Rumors also have it that by letting Jefferson go, the Nets are clearing up salary cap space in hopes of landing LeBron James in the future when they finally make that move from Jersey to Brooklyn.

The Indiana Pacers and the Toronto Raptors also made a trade that involved Jermaine O’Neal and T.J. Ford switching teams. Ford will be joined by Jerryd Bayless after the Pacers took the Arizona star at No.11.

Quite a busy night in the NBA eh? Let’s hope these moves work out for all teams when it’s time to play ball again in November.
