Florida and Oklahoma to play for 2009 BCS national title
Yes, the BCS bowl game match-ups are here.
After everything that has happened in the 2008 NCAA college football season, we finally have the match-ups that will determine the best of the best on the college football gridiron.
Since we’re discussing about the best of the best, nothing is probably bigger than the 2009 BCS National Championship Game. And for the granddaddy of college football, we have two teams earning the invite to compete for the national title, two teams nobody probably anticipated to get this far.
The final BCS standings of the
season had the Oklahoma Sooners and the Florida Gators at No.1 and No.2 respectively, setting up the first meeting between these two storied franchises for the BCS national title on January 8 in Miami.
The national championship game between the Sooners and the Gators, two teams with one loss each, doesn’t normally make for a debate-free lead-up to the title game.
But even President-elect Barack Obama, outspokenly in favor of a playoff for college football, might have to agree that both of these teams belong to play in the big dance.
The 12-1 Oklahoma Sooners became the first team in college football since 1919 to score 60-plus points in five straight games. They have a seven-game winning streak going for them since suffering their first loss of the season to the Texas Longhorns.
On the other hand, the Florida Gators, also at 12-1, averaged 49 points a game in the nine contests they’ve won in a row since suffering their only loss of the season to the Mississippi Rebels. They have quarterback-extraordinaire, Tim Tebow to thank for that.
