Georgetown Hoyas beat Villanova Wildcats, creating controversy in Washington without George W. Bush

The score was 55-53 as the Hoyas defeated the Wildcats in stunning fashion.

But you probably won’t realize how controversy gave the Georgetown Hoyas their first home win over the Villanova Wildcats this 2007-08 NCAA college basketball season in more than a decade just by reading that alone.

You see, the win the Georgetown Hoyas scored over Villanova was probably even more controversial than the reigning king of Washington, George W. Bush. But hey, isn’t it ironic that Georgetown came up with the controversial win in ‘’George town?'’ He he…

Georgetown HoyasThe score was tied, 53-53, with less than a second left to play when Georgetown’s Jonathan Wallace dribbled 70 feet from the basket. Definitely not a prime spot to win the game with Wallace a good 70 feet away from their hoop right? Apparently, it was enough as Wallace heard a whistle that startled even himself.

‘’At first I thought I stepped out of bounds,'’ Jonathan Wallace said, ‘’because I was trying to make a play with the time running down. But I did kind of [feel a] nudge when I was trying to turn the corner.'’

‘’So,'’ Wallace shrugged, ‘’a call’s a call.'’

And as it turns out, there was a call alright. A call that ultimately gave Georgetown a win over the Villanova Wildcats. With less than a second remaining in the game, Villanova’s Corey Stokes was called for a foul to send the startled Wallace to the foul line with the chance to win it for his team.

And he did, hitting both free throws to give the Georgetown Hoyas the 55-53 win.

‘’Wallace was dribbling, and the ref called a foul,'’ Corey Stokes said. ‘’What are you going to do?'’ Um… Shoot yourself in the head with a shotgun?
