How the Boston Celtics won the 2008 NBA Finals

It’s official, there will be nothing else on TV worth your while.

With the 2008 NBA Finals over and still a few more weeks away from football, it’s that time of the year when you’ll probably have to reintroduce yourself with the sun and brush up on your forgotten social skills.

For all ya’ll who still refuses to take your girlfriend to the mall, you can still watch baseball. Of course, just like last year and the year before that, it’s still boring as hell. Then again, we can always reflect on how the Boston Celtics pulled of a miracle season after such a disastrous campaign the year before. Hold on to your hats folks because, with nothing else on TV, this should give you an escape, if you will, from the boring days ahead until the new NFL season begin.

Paul PierceThe signing of Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen is where it all started. Following one of the worst seasons in Boston Celtics history, (and after losing out on Greg Oden and Kevin Durant in the draft…) the Celtics became instant title contenders with two future hall-of-famers joining Paul Pierce in Boston.

With Paul Pierce STILL leading the way, the Celtics were able to have the best record in the NBA to secure homecourt advantage throughout the NBA playoffs. And mind you, that advantage sure came in handy for the Celtics in the postseason.

In the playoffs, they faced off with the no.8 seed Atlanta Hawks, and after the Celtics simply dominated the regular season, many anticipated that the Hawks won’t even have a fighting chance against the best ranked team in the NBA. The Celtics never anticipated that Ray Allen will struggle to start their postseason campaign.

After six games, everybody was shocked as the Atlanta Hawks, with Ray Allen struggling then, were able to hold homecourt thrice and push the Celtics to a do-or-die Game 7, their first of two game sevens they’ll play in the playoffs in Boston. Thankfully, the Celtics had the homecourt edge and that came in handy against the Hawks in the first round.

In the second round, LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers were next. And just like the last round, the Celtics again struggled away from Boston, winning the first two games at home, losing the next two in Cleveland, winning Game 5 in Boston and again losing Game 6 away from it.

Again, the Celtics’ struggles away from home were highlighted. This series against the Cleveland Cavaliers was where the Celtics had trouble the most. Hell, they almost lost Game 7 and ended their Cinderella run right then and there. Thankfully, the game was played in Boston as Celtic fans fueled their team past LeBron James and the pesky Cavs.

Against the Detroit Pistons in the 2008 Eastern Conference Finals, the Boston Celtics finally did something they’ve never done before in the postseason. After dropping Game 2 at home, their first loss in Boston in the playoffs, they don’t have much of a choice but to accomplish the impossible and win on the road.

And the Celtics did just that, winning Game 3 at the Palace of Auburn Hills to earn their very first road game of the postseason. Both teams won their respective home games in the fourth and fifth face-off but after the Celtics won a road playoff game again, winning Game 6 in Detroit to win the Eastern Conference title, many started believing that this team can very well win the title.

Hey, with Ray Allen back shooting and with the rest of the Celtics finally proving they can win away from Boston, who will think otherwise right?

The Los Angeles Lakers, the no.1 seed in the West, was next to face Boston for all the marbles. The Lakers came into the 2008 NBA Finals as the favorites to win the title but the Boston Celtics, after everything that these guys have been through, just wanted the championship more than Kobe Bryant and his Lakers did.

Again, the Celtics won the first two games at home but after blowing a huge lead in Boston to almost lose Game 2, the Lakers had the momentum heading back to Los Angeles for Game 3.

The Los Angeles Lakers clearly had momentum as they won Game 3 to cut into the Celtics’ lead to 2-1. The Celtics knew they have to win a road game again. Losing Game 4 with Game 5 still to be played in Los Angeles, thanks to the Finals’ 2-3-2 format, can prove to be detrimental to the Celtics’ title hopes.

Thanks to an astonishing comeback win, the Celtics pulled off a win in Game 4. After being down by as many as 24 points, the Celtics came back and won the game, much to the dismay of the Lakers. The Celtics, in my opinion, already won the NBA title in Game 4 after they crushed the Lakers’ spirits in Los Angeles when they came back from the 24-point deficit.

It was the greatest comeback in NBA history and after two games, the Celtics were crowned champions of the world because of it.
