Is San Antonio Spurs All-Star Tim Duncan a Center or a Power Forward in the 2007-08 NBA Basketball Season?

Who cares eh?

Well, with the All-Star game approaching as the midway point of the 2007-08 NBA basketball season sets in, people voting for the starting lineup in the Western Conference cares. (Probably…)

Why? Because we all know TD plays center for the Spurs and yet, if he’s listed as one, Houston Rockets center Yao Ming will beat him in the All-Star balloting for the starting spot in the West. That’s probably why he’s listed at power forward and there’s where the controversy start.

I know, that’s probably a little lame but hey, work with me here. Another reason why Tim Duncan is a center listed as a power forward is Tim Duncanprimarily because of the fact that the Spurs had All-Star center David Robinson playing then when Duncan entered the league.

The team called Tim Duncan as its power forward, playing alongside center David Robinson. But when ‘the Admiral’ finally retired, the San Antonio Spurs still had Duncan listed at forward.

Hell, even when he starts with smaller guys trying to play center for his team like, say, Fabricio Oberto, Duncan still spends most of his time defending the paint and guarding the opposing team’s center.

Very very VERY center-like.

Other players that have the exact same thing are guys like Jermaine O’Neal, Antonio McDyess, Amare Stoudemire and of course, Rasheed Wallace. So how come this is slowly becoming quite a strange trend in the NBA?

For one, players find the definition of a center as the team’s unusually tall player. In short, the team’s circus freak. That’s probably why Kevin Garnett (and a whole lot of players…) still is listed at 6-11 when in fact, they are really towering seven-footers.

So is Tim Duncan a power forward or a center? I’ll tell you one thing, he’s a POWER FORWARD right now who has always been at the CENTER of attention in Texas.

Most of the matchup problems dealing with Tim Duncan come from his abilities to face up and put the ball on the floor like a forward. The reality of today’s game make Yao one of the few Centers in the game.

The fast pace offensive game of today has made a lot of 6′ 9″ guys into the centers on their teams.

So mark Tim Duncan down as a forward and pray for the return of the true center to the NBA.

Shaq played alongside Tree rollins his first year. They were both still considered centers. Maybe it has to do with the fact that there have been so many great centers, that to compare him to other hall of fame centers would diminish his career. Think about it, Malone, Barkley, McHale or Wilt, Kareem, Russell, Shaq (not to mention the Dream and the Admiral)

  • Dino Bryant Says:

I have yet to see one good argument for Duncan being a power forward. All I hear hysterics, bruised feelings, and premature dismissals. Duncan plays with his back to the basket. He plays the strong side of the court. He is on the low blocks. He guards the paint. He is taller and heavier than his frontcourt mates (Oberto and Thomas) He usually guards centers and they almost guard him. He is not the gold standard for power forwards. He is a protypical and true as they come center. BTW Malone and Barkley were power forwards–not centers.
