Jeff Reed gives Steelers the W on Monday Night Football
And all it took for the Steelers to turn this one around was 15 seconds.
The Steelers were on the verge of losing for only the second time this 2008-09 NFL football season. They were down 13-3 at the end of the first half, failing to put anything else on the board after scoring the first points of the game early in the first quarter with a 49-yard field goal from Jeff Reed.
Luckily for the Pittsburgh Steelers, the game will end the way it started, with Jeff Reed. But before Reed’s game-winning field goal, the Steelers had to turn this one around first and give their kicker a chance to win it for them.
The Baltimore Ravens were holding a
commanding 13-3 lead to start the second half. After Santonio Holmes cut into that lead, coming up with a 38-yard touchdown play with Ben Roethlisberger to help Pittsburgh close in, 13-10, with 4:09 remaining in the third, the Ravens had no idea that they will ultimately relinquish their lead 15 seconds later.
Starting from Ravens territory, Baltimore’s undrafted rookie quarterback Joe Flacco fumbled the football. It was then recovered by Pittsburgh’s Lamarr Woodley for a 7-yard fumble return. After Jeff Reed banked in the PAT, it was seven more points for Pittsburgh in a span of 15 seconds.
Yep, the Steelers had the momentum back and Heinz Field was rocking again.
With the score now on Pittsburgh’s side, leading 17-13, the Steelers had the chance to further pad that lead in the fourth and final quarter. Unfortunately, they can only come up with a field goal on their scoring drive, thanks to Reed (again…) who completed a 19-yarder to give Pittsburgh the 20-13 lead.
With four minutes remaining in the game, the Ravens knew they had to score a touchdown to tie it. And thanks to a two-yard run from Le’Ron Mcclain, the Ravens were able to tie this one up, 20-20, to force overtime.
The Ravens had the ball first to start the extra period. But after the undrafted Joe Flacco looked like the best quarterback in football for four quarters, he was unable to come up with a single first down as the Ravens had to punt the ball from their own territory.
And with a cannon of an arm like Roethlisberger’s waiting to get back on the field, it was bad news for Baltimore. Ben Roethlisberger brought his team just close enough to the endzone for Jeff Reed to kick the game-winning 46-yard field goal.
BAM. At least for a few minutes, the Steelers were happy to win what should’ve been a loss at home, completely forgetting about the fact that they lost both Kendall Simmons and Rashard Mendenhall for the rest of the season in this very game.
Of course, nobody was telling the Steelers that.

good to see some Monday Night Football odds getting the love…sports are so scarce on Monday nights, it’s a good thing there’s quality football to bet on! (even though it took a chunk out of the Steelers last week — they aren’t gonna do so well against the Jags, I think)
