Marty Schottenheimer and Bill Cowher being eyed by the Cleveland Browns as coach for 2009-10 NFL Season

Because they probably can’t wait to get rid of Romeo Crennel after a disappointing year.

After what has been a disappointing stint so far in the 2008-09 NFL football season, the Cleveland Browns look ready to move on under a new head coach. They seem ready to let Romeo Crennel go and according to some sources, they are already formulating a plan to sign one of their targets, former San Diego Chargers coach Marty Schottenheimer.

You read it, the Cleveland Browns are leaning towards having Marty Schottenheimer as their new head coach for the 2009 season.

And although Browns owner Randy Lerner said he will still evaluate Romeo Crennel when Romeo Crennelthis season is over, I’m betting we won’t be seeing Romeo back in the Browns sidelines for the foreseeable future.

Marty Schottenheimer was fired by the San Diego Chargers despite leading the team to a 14-2 record and a first-round playoff bye back in 2006. A loss to the New England Patriots in the second round PLUS a broken relationship with general manager A.J. Smith led to his somewhat surprising dismissal in February of 2007.

Of course, since the San Diego Chargers still had a solid 2006 campaign despite losing to the Pats, the players were upset over Schottenheimer’s dismissal. Now that those guys are struggling this year, you just know they are reminiscing those days when playoff runs were a certainty under Schottenheimer.

Too bad.

Schottenheimer, if he will be the Browns’ new head coach, will be returning to the franchise since working as the defensive coordinator for the team under Sam Rutigliano back in 1980. He took over the head coaching job when Rutigliano was fired midway through the 1984 season.

Aside from the idea of bringing ‘’Marty ball'’ to Cleveland, the Browns are also open to the idea of having former Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Bill Cowher. That is if the former Super Bowl XL winning head coach is ready to return to the NFL sidelines.

I am SO TIRED of the revolving door in Cleveland Browns organization. When Romeo and Phil were hired we were told there would be hard times but that they were in it to BUILD a solid organization. Firing Romeo, a man with 4 Super Bowl rings, is NOT the answer. The fans are so fickle here in Cleveland that they have no patience for the process. They want instant success regardless of who’s at the helm. KEEP ROMEO AND PHIL. Easier schedule next year, injuries will hopefully be healed, a high draft pick, Joe J and Ryan T should be back and another year with the 3-4.
