Memphis Tigers to extend streak vs Louisville Cardinals?
Four wins in a row, that’s what Memphis will be gunning for when they host the Cardinals this Friday.
Week 7 of the 2008 NCAA college football season continues this Friday as two of the better football programs in the NCAA face-off in the only featured game of the day before Saturday.
The Memphis Tigers will ride on their momentum as they gun for their fourth straight victory against Louisville. The Tigers have averaged 233 rushing yards during their three-game win streak after starting the season at 0-3. Tigers runningback Curtis Steele topped the century mark in all three wins.
‘’We dug a bad hole being 0-3 starting out,'’ the Memphis head coach said. ‘’But now, boy, am I proud of our guys fighting back at 0-3 and finding a way to get back even. Now we’re back in the hunt.'’
As for the Louisville Cardinals, they had a week of rest to regain their composure after the disheartening loss they suffered against the Connecticut Huskies. Losing to Connecticut dropped Louisville to a mediocre standing of 2-2 after all the hype that surrounded them before this season began.
The Cardinals will need every point they can get against an improved Memphis squad that has reeled off three straight in the rekindling of one of the region’s most enduring rivalries. Friday’s game will be the 41st meeting between the schools, but the first since Louisville jumped from Conference USA to the Big East in 2005.
The last time these two teams played football, they combined for 105 points, 1,202 yards of total offense and 15 plays of more than 20 yards. It was an offensive explosion on a Thursday night on ESPN that saw then No.14 Louisville squeak by, 56-49 on a one-yard run by Eric Shelton with just 37 seconds left in the game back in 2004.
The lead changed 10 times, the last time on Shelton’s TD. Louisville linebacker Abe Brown intercepted a pass to seal the Cardinals win with 21 seconds left.
From 1996 to 2004, the Tigers and Cardinals played eight times, with six of the games decided by a touchdown or less, making this Friday’s game must-see TV.
