Novak Djokovic was eliminated out of the 2008 Wimbledon Championships by Marat Safin
Oops… There goes one favorite to win in England.
You read it people, the first heavy favorite of the 2008 Wimbledon Championships to be eliminated was Novak Djokovic after Marat Safin cam up with a win in straight sets, winning 6-4, 7-6 (3), 6-2 on Centre Court.
And to think that Novak Djokovic will lose to a guy ranked No.75 in the world. After all the hype surrounding Djokovic coming into this tournament, nobody probably expected Ana Ivanovic’s main squeeze to go out as early as the second round of the 2008 All England Lawn Tennis Championships.
‘’It was certainly a very bad day for
me,'’ Novak Djokovic said after losing to Marat Safin. ‘’I didn’t do anything that I was supposed to, he was very solid in all segments.'’
Marat Safin moves on to the third round of the 2008 Wimbledon against No.29 Andreas Seppi. Safin knows nobody expects him to go deeper into the tournament, much more beating a world class tennis player like Djokovic.
‘’He’s the one who has to win matches. For me, nobody expects anything,'’ said Safin, who admitted he had not dared look beyond the second round. ‘’Now, I’ll have to check, the way I’m playing now, I could go far.'’
This year marks the 132nd edition of the Wimbledon Championships, and the third Grand Slam event of the year.
Recently crowned French Open queen Ana Ivanovic, together with other tennis superstars such as the hot and sexy Maria Sharapova, Venus and Serena Williams, are the top female stars of the tournament.
Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and now, Marat Safin, are the stars closely watched on the men’s side. After Djokovic was booted out of the tournament quite unceremoniously, the 2008 Wimbledon Championships just got more interesting as we move on to the third round.
