And in case you haven’t heard, they haven’t awarded Team USA with the Olympic basketball championship just yet.

And while Team USA looks primed to win gold at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, one team that may shock the rest of the world yet again is Australia. They are set to meet on Wednesday and the Aussies sure look the part of show stoppers.

After pounding Germany 106-57, Team USA has been the poster child for dominance in the Olympic Games. Other than Michael Phelps, the US basketball team gives the United States a better shot of winning a gold medal in Beijing.

Of course, with NBA stars like LeBron James, Kobe Bryant and Chris Paul, that gold medal is for Team USA to lose more than win it. Hell, Olympic officials could just hand them the gold medal already and none of the countries competing in this already one-sided basketball tournament will contest.

But then again, there’s Team Australia.

After beating then undefeated Lithuania in emphatic fashion, winning by a whopping 31 points, the Aussies showed the dominance on the hardwood you’ll only see from Team USA in this year’s Games of the XXIX Olympiad. Pitting these two giants against each other should be a beauty and if the Americans are not careful, they might see their hopes for an Olympic gold medal end abruptly again.

The Aussies are ready for the biggest upset of the Olympics and with Andrew Bogut leading the way, these guys definitely have the tools to do just that.

‘’The tournament is decided by easy baskets, and with America it’s hard to get a shot off, and it’s hard to get the ball past the half-court line, and they beat you down the floor and get layups,'’ Australian coach Brian Goorjian said.

‘’But if you can get your defense set, you’ve got a chance. No one I’ve seen has been able to do that, and that’s our challenge.'’

The last time these two teams met on the court, Australia was within striking distance of the US, trailing the Americans by just seven points with five minutes remaining in the fourth.

Oh yeah, Bogut was not playing for the Aussies then.
