Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, join Wimbledon Elite Eight
It’s now down to the final eight.
You read it, the final eight quarter-final spots of the 2008 Wimbledon Championships were finally determined and both Federer and Nadal, the two heavy favorites to win the Wimbledon title, got through.
Rafael Nadal earned his ticket to the final eight after dominating Mikhail Youzhny, 6-3 6-3 6-1, avenging the worst defeat of his career when he suffered an astonishing 6-0 6-1 upset.
Nadal is on his way to a possible third straight final appearance in
the 2008 All England Lawn Tennis Championships and after quickly dispatching Youzhny in two hours and 10 minutes to advance to the quarter-finals, we can’t see any reason to think otherwise.
The 17th seeded Youzhny traded blows with the 2008 French Open champion from the baseline but Nadal overpowered the Russian with some typically ferocious shots. I guess you can say Nadal thought he was back at Roland Garros playing on a clay surface eh? Hmm… I wonder if Roger Federer was around watching his fiercest rival’s brilliance?
Speaking of, the world No.1 also earned a ticket to the 2008 Wimbledon quarter-finals after an also dominant win over former world No.1 Lleyton Hewitt. Although Federer’s win was not as dominant as Nadal’s, he did play against a former world No.1 in Hewitt and that’s more than enough reason why you may jump on the guy’s bandwagon.
Roger Federer fired down 21 aces to beat the 2002 Wimbledon champion 7-6 (9/7) 6-2 6-4. Although it did look like an even match with the opening set tightly contested, Federer made sure he’ll put away Hewitt in the next ones.
‘’I think I served really well, which was important against Lleyton,'’ Federer admitted. ‘’I saw he was struggling with his hip but nevertheless, he was dangerous. I think the key was the first set tie-break and afterwards I played consistently well and saved a lot of break points.'’
