Roy Jones Jr. wants CHANGE too, meets Joe Calzaghe
CHANGE. Everybody has sure been using that word a lot these days.
But this time, it’s not President-Elect Barack Obama talking about it but Roy Jones Jr., the former heavyweight, former light heavyweight champion of the world. And although he has no plans of ‘’changing'’ the economic situation in the United States from a political seat, he wants CHANGE on Saturday night, that is changing Joe Calzaghe’s STILL unblemished record.
You read it, the former pound-for-pound king is looking to hand Joe Calzaghe the very first loss of his career. Calzaghe has been perfect so far with a 45-0 record, 32 of them coming by way of knockout. To say that Calzaghe has one of the most intimidating records in boxing is now an understatement but for some reason, Roy Jones is not fazed one bit.
The 39-year-old Roy Jones Jr. believes he can CHANGE Calzaghe’s dominant run so far inside the squared circle. ‘’That’s what I’m about,'’ Jones said at a news conference before breaking into a grin. ‘’You better believe, whatever it takes, I’ve got it.'’
Is this just wishful thinking for the guy once known as the best fighter in the world? Calzaghe seems determined to put a stamp on his legacy as a ‘’super power'’ in boxing. Some have already tried stopping this freight train and failed miserably. Last April 19, 2007, Bernard ‘’the Executioner'’ Hopkins did but ended up giving Calzaghe his 45th straight win.
Calzaghe wants to cement his legacy as the best in the world and he knows beating a fighter of Jones’ caliber should be able to do just that.
‘’This opportunity is a long time coming and after I beat Hopkins in April, there was only one fight I wanted next and that was Roy Jones,'’ Joe Calzaghe said. ‘’Once again I am willing to go to America and fight him in his own country. None of that matters to me as I have always believed in my abilities to fight and beat the best in the game.'’
This is only Calzaghe’s second fight in North America and judging with his perfect record, it seems it doesn’t matter to him where he fights. Yup, Jones could be walking into a European ass-whooping.
