Serena Williams now has three U.S. Open titles after winning the 2008 United States Open Championships
Greatness. Yes, Serena should now have just that.
While Roger Federer was slowly climbing the top of the mountain again, Serena Williams was doing the same, slowly beating the competition to win the 2008 United States Open Championships.
It was a dominant performance for Serena Williams in the finals too, beating Jelena Jankovic 6-4, 7-5 in what many are calling the finest women’s finals at Flushing Meadows in many years.
Sure, the hot and sexy Maria Sharapova may have captured the hearts of tennis fans around the world, but with Serena Williams winning her third U.S. Open title, the women’s side of things sure got more competitive than ever before.
So how did Serena got here?
Serena Williams stalled back Dinara Safina 6-3, 6-2 in the semifinala at Flushing Meadows Saturday to take on Jelena Jankovic for the title. It was 10 years in the making for Serena Williams to return to the U.S. Open final, where her very first major title came in 1999.
‘’I just am excited to obviously still be here,'’ Serena Williams said, ‘’and, 10 years later, still putting up a major fight.'’
This was the 12th Grand Slam final for the fourth seeded Williams. Already the 1999 and 2002 U.S. champion, Serena returned to the U.S. Open final for the first time in six years to become a three-time winner here at Flushing Meadows.
