Who will win the Heisman?

Strike a Pose – the prestigious Heisman trophy will be handed out this Saturday, a fact that hasn’t escaped sports bettors from around the country as Heisman wagering volume has really picked up.

It’s been a big week for college football betting, with the Bowl schedule being announced and the build up to the awarding of the trophy for the best collegiate player in the country.

The Heisman field has been whittled down to three potential winners:

Last year’s winner and Florida Gators QB Tim Tebow, listed at +300 at SPORTSBETTING.COM, Oklahoma Sooners signal caller Sam Bradford who is listed as the odds-on favorite at -400 and Texas Longhorns pivot Colt McCoy who is the longer shot at +500.

It’s easy to see why Tim Tebow and Sam Bradford have favorable odds; the two will be meeting in the BCS championship game with the Gators favored by 3.5-points.

Tebow took the honor last year and has posted impressive numbers again this year.

On the way to leading Florida to a 12-1 record, an SEC title and a berth in the title game, Tebow earned a 176.74 QB rating on the strength of a 64.9 percent completed passes; 2515 passing yards; 28 passing TDs; 564 rushing yards and 12 rushing TDs.

If Tebow wins, he would be the first player since Ohio State’s Archie Griffin to capture back- to-back Heismans.

En route to a Big 12 title, a ticket to Miami and an identical 12-1 record like Florida, Oklahoma’s Sam Bradford completed 68.3 percent of his passes; threw for 4464 yards and 48 passing TDs and garnered a 186.29 passer rating.

Take note: the Heisman winner has often struggled to finish the season off with a National Championship. Of the 27 previous quarterbacks to win the Heisman, just seven won the national championship that same year.

And then we have Colt McCoy. The Texas Longhorns won’t be playing for the national title and whether the Big 12 tie breaker system, the BCS or a loss to Texas Tech is to blame is a story for another day.

Bottom line is Texas will play Ohio State in the Fiesta Bowl with SPORTSBETTING.COM listing the Longhorns as 10-point favorites.

However, nothing should be taken away from QB Colt McCoy’s season.

During 2008, McCoy was sharper than both Tebow and Bradford, completing 77.6 percent of his passes for 3445 yards and 32 passing TDs and complemented that with 576 rushing yards and 10 rushing TDs; his passer rating came in at 179.20.

The betting action on each player is mirroring the odds with Bradford getting 38 percent of the bets followed by Tebow with 28 percent and McCoy with 21 percent but before you go with favorite Bradford you might want to consider a wager on McCoy.

The player at the top of the final Scripps Howard Heisman Trophy poll, which was released earlier this week, has gone on to win 18 of the last 21 Heisman awards.

Neither Tebow (third) nor Bradford (second) topped this week’s final list, McCoy did; just something to consider.
