Tiger Woods wins the 2008 U.S. Open on 91st hole
Wha?!? You expected a virtual unknown that goes by the name ‘’Rocco'’ beat him?
I thought so. The 2008 U.S. Open is finally over with Tiger Woods, the very guy everybody knew will win, won it. Tiger defeated 158th ranked golfer Rocco Mediate last Monday to add another trophy to his name.
Yep, the the two-month layoff didn’t bother Tiger Woods. Hell, he wasn’t even favoring his knee after having surgery on it that put him out of the game for about eight weeks. With both his knee and his heart throbbing, he masterfully delivered in the clutch like most games he played with a club.
The U.S. Open playoff ended with Tiger beating a somewhat gritty Rocco Mediate, a victory that even Tiger himself found surprising. (Of course, it’s not THAT surprising to us. He is after all, Tiger Woods, but hey, we’ll go with it…)
‘’I think this is probably the best ever,'’ Tiger Woods said. ‘’All things considered, I don’t know how I ended up in this position, to be honest with you. It was a long week. A lot of doubt, a lot of questions going into the week. And here we are, 91 holes later.'’
Some say that the conclusion to the 2008 U.S. Open made it the best U.S. Open EVER.
The scenes that transpired right then and there at Torrey Pines will remain for decades to come. Someday, it will be talked about the way golf aficionados recall the 1950 and 1960 U.S. Opens, or the ‘86 Masters.
They’ll talk about how Rocco Mediate ALMOST came up with a huge upset to become the oldest fart to ever win a U.S. Open final. They’ll talk about the back-nine drama that saw Woods go from 3 up to 1 down to all square against a 45-year-old chatterbox with a bad back who wouldn’t go away. They’ll also talk about the successive layers of tension that just kept building as the tournament just kept going.
Of course, they’ll also talk about how Tiger Woods won it, on one leg.
