Time to take a look what’s happening in Group Stages of the 2008 UEFA European Football Championships
Boredom at its best, that’s what.
But for those of you who just loves talking about the 2008 UEFA European Football Championships, you’ll probably read through this article like Tony Dungy on his Colts playbook.
For starters, we have Russia beating European Champions Greece 1-0 in their Euro 2008 Group D match at the EM Stadion Wals-Seizenheim in Salzburg, Austria.
The loss to Greece put them out of the tournament, much to the dismay of their fans. A costly error from Greece keeper Antonis Nikopolidis led to the only goal of the fixture. The game went into half-time 1-0 to Russia, who commanded the first-half and could have extended their lead.
The second-half kicked-off at a terrific pace with chances for both sides, and with Greece becoming far more of a threat on the Russian goal. I the end, the Russian side was just the far superior team.
In Group A, Turkey gained last-gasp revenge for the Battle of Istanbul with a 2-1 victory and sent co-hosts Switzerland spiraling out of the Euro 2008. Portugal beat Czech Republic 3-1, and Portugal won 2-0 over Turkey.
In Group B games, Croatia beat Germany 2-1, thanks to goals from Darijo Srna and Ivica Olic, assisted by an error from Jens Lehmann, taking points, as well as the top spot in the group. Chelsea FC star Michael Ballack and new Spurs star Luka Modric fought a commendable battle in midfield.
Germany will still go through if they draw with Austria in their last group game but, as second-placed finishers, they will probably be paired with Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal in the quarter-finals.
In Group C, Holland dumped France 4-1 in their Euro 2008 match up. Holland boss Van Basten said, ‘’We played very well against Italy but tonight we were lucky. We got the goals at the right time. France tried everything that they could and put us under enormous pressure, so I certainly have to congratulate our defense for the way that they coped.'’
Still in other games, the fixture between Italy and Romania finished with a 1-1 draw as controversy struck Italy at the end of the first half.
Simone Perrotta put in a wonderful cross and Luca Toni cracked his header home. But Henning disallowed it for offside, even though Toni was at least two yards onside.
The pre-tournament favorites looked dead and buried after 55 minutes when Luca Zambrotta’s clanger let Mutu slot home and stun Italy. But seconds later it was 1-1 as Giorgio Chiellini nodded a corner into the path of Christian Panucci to scramble in.
