Trevor Immelman wins 2008 Augusta Masters
Our sentiments exactly. After four days of waiting who passes out first under the scorching heat of the sun, somebody was crowned as the winner of the recently held 2008 Augusta Masters last Sunday.
Who won? Somebody that goes by the name Trevor Immelman. Originally from South Africa, Immelman stretched his lead over Tiger Woods and the rest of them other golfers to as many as six shots to hold on for a 3-over 75 to win his very first green jacket.
Oh yeah, the win also made Trevor Immelman as the first South African since Gary Player in 1978 to win the Masters in Augusta,
denying Tiger of a fifth green jacket. (He’ll probably just go get one at Walmart now…)
Tigers Woods blew away his chances at the Masters that was absolutely his for the taking. And with it goes any more talk about a possible 2008 Grand Slam. ”I just didn’t quite have it this week,” Tigers Woods said.
Four months ago, Trevor Immelman was in a hospital in South Africa as doctors prepared to remove a tumor from his diaphragm, learning only after the operation that it was benign. Now, he’s left standing in Augusta as the new Masters champion.
”It’s the craziest thing I’ve ever heard of,” Trevor Immelman said of a 12-month period that has seen him battle through an intestinal parasite and a cancer scare. ”This has been the ultimate roller-coaster ride, and I hate roller coasters.”
Immelman led from start to finish, becoming the first player since 1980 to lead or share the lead in every round. He also tied Arnold Palmer (1962) for the highest final round by a Masters champion.
The three guys behind Immelman going into the last round were a combined 18-over par. Only four players broke par.
