Vikings beat the Saints in strange Monday Night game
You read it, this week’s Monday Night Football game sure was a strange one.
Just when you thought you’ve had your fair share of surprises in the 2008-09 NFL football season, Week 5’s Monday Night Football game featured an even weirder finish to what has been a season with a crooked sense of humor.
After all, it’s not everyday you can tell your friends you saw a team stop their opponents’ superstar, tied the record for most punts returned for a touchdown and STILL lost the game. Well, the New Orleans Saints did and boy, was it a very very disappointing loss for those guys indeed.
The Minnesota Vikings edged the Saints in New Orleans, 30-27, despite letting Saints halfback Reggie Bush tie the record for most punts returned for a touchdown.
Yes, the Saints sure were clicking on all cylinders in this Monday Night Football game but for some reason, couldn’t convert their incredible performance to points. The Saints became the first team to outgain their opponents by 130-plus yards in the first half and still trail by at least 10 points since the Texans against the Steelers six years ago.
With Reggie Bush giving the Saints all sorts of reasons to win the game, New Orleans’ special teams gave more reasons to lose this one. After the Saints’ first failed field goal attempt was blocked and returned for a 59-yard touchdown, New Orleans missed the second one, allowing Minnesota to drive in the final minutes of the game, setting up Ryan Longwell for his 30-yard game winning kick.
‘’It’s probably one of the weirdest games I’ve ever been involved in,'’ Saints quarterback Drew Brees said. ‘’Just the way this thing kind of went back and forth. I’m trying to digest it all right now and in the end it’s a loss.'’
‘’That’s extremely disappointing, especially when once again we have a chance to win it at the end.'’
After the Saints defense managed to stop Vikings runningback Adrian Peterson, one of the best in the game on the ground, losing this one in front of their home crowd definitely hurts. They have the Raiders visiting them next and we’ll see how these guys bounce back from this one.
