West Virginia Mountaineers visit the Colorado Buffaloes
Yes, college football will once again take over your television sets.
Week 4 of the 2008 NCAA college football season continues on Thursday as the West Virginia Mountaineers try to get back to the win column when they visit the 2-0 Colorado Buffaloes.
The West Virginia Mountaineers may have lost last week to East Carolina, 24-3, but for some reason, their head coach Bill Stewart is still smiling. How come? Must have something to do with his new contract, locking him up with the team he led to a Fiesta Bowl win over the Sooners last January.
Sure, the Mountaineers
may have lost running back Steve Slaton to the NFL, but these guys still have quarterback Pat White and speedy tailback Noel Devine among eight returning starters on an offense that scored nearly 40 points per game last season.
For the Colorado Buffaloes, this team defeated Colorado State 38-17 in Week 1 before finding a way to beat the Eastern Washington Eagles in a close contest, winning 31-24.
The Eagles were leading 24-17 with less than four minutes to play before Buffaloes QB Cody Hawkins came up with his third touchdown of the game, tying the score at 24-24. Colorado has relied mainly on Hawkins’ arm to move the ball in this one, completing 71.6 percent of his passes for 475 yards to get the W.
However, while their passing game could be one of the best in the nation right now, their ground game is absolutely terrible. The Buffaloes are only averaging 3.5 yards per carry, 90th overall, and I’m not expecting that to be any better against a usually tough West Virginia run defense.
Our pick? West Virginia will spoil any dreams Colorado may have of a perfect season.
