Which Country has the Most Medals at the 2008 Beijing Olympics? (You have no idea how close it is…)

Yes people, the biggest sporting event of the year, (until Super Bowl XLIII gets here anyway…) is still on.

The 2008 Beijing Olympics already has a few surprises like Michael Phelps outdoing himself, setting world records after another and who can forget the day when an American got humiliated by a Russian in a pole vaulting event.

As for the tournament’s medal count? Like many probably expected, Team USA is still leading with 83 medals in total. Thanks to the United States’ ‘’Redeem Team'’ (I know, it’s silly…) they still have a better shot of adding into that count once the Olympic basketball tournament concludes.

Gold Medal CountChina, this year’s Olympic hosts, is in second place with 81 total medals. But perhaps what’s surprising is the fact that China holds a HUGE lead in terms of GOLD MEDAL count. As of press time, they have 45 gold compared to the United States’ 27 which is good for second.

And in case you haven’t figured it out yet, this year’s Olympic medal race is tight with only a couple of medals separating the Americans and the Chinese. It’ll be interesting how this one ends.

Running third is Russia with 46 total medals; 14 gold, 14 silver and 18 bronze. Britain, with 38 total medals and Australia, with 37 total medals, follow although I’m not sure if these guys can catch the Chinese or the Americans.

Most of the gold medals won by the United States came from the sporting event of swimming where Michael Phelps continue his ridiculous dominance over the rest.

China, on the other hand, was expected to control the field in gymnastics, diving, and weightlifting and has lived up to those expectations. China has won eight gold medals in gymnastics alone, while topping the rest of the world in the sport of diving.

Can the USA catch the Chinese’s gold medal count? We’ll know soon enough.
