Who are the next best thing in the NFL at QB?
Quarterbacks sure get all the glory in the NFL these days.
And while most of the league’s better quarterbacks are being slowed down by injuries this 2008-09 NFL football season, we can’t help but wonder who are the best young quarterbacks in the business who just might take this game that we love away from Peyton Manning, Brett Favre and Tom Brady.
American Football is arguably considered to be the ultimate team sport, but quarterbacks still get more than their share of the glory. And the question is if you could pick who are the young quarterbacks in the 2008-09 NFL football season that just might become the next Peyton Manning or Tom Brady who will it be?
First, we have Matt Leinart of Arizona
Cardinals. Leinart is the total package. He has both the mental and physical aspects of the game down cold, and he’s only going to get better. Playing in a pro-style offense at USC has prepped him for the pro game. And playing under the bright lights at Southern Cal prepped him for all the media hype of the NFL.
His leadership skills and maturity have also already been well-noted. It still puzzles me why this guy hasn’t totally taken over the show in Arizona aside from the fact that the Arizona Cardinals are surprisingly doing just fine with Leinart letting Kurt Warner play out what’s left of his aging career.
Next, we have Jay Cutler of the Denver Broncos.
One doesn’t have to look very far to see that Jay Cutler is the best quarterback selection the Denver Broncos have made the last few years. Cutler was picked by the Broncos with their first choice in the 2006 draft and many experts agree that he was the best quarterback in a class that included Matt Leinart and Vince Young. Cutler has one of the strongest arms in the NFL, with comparisons being made to a young Brett Favre as well as a certain former Broncos quarterback that goes by the name John Elway. He’s mobile with good size (6′ 3, 233 pounds), composed, confident and a weight room junkie with a reputation as a team player.
Another young quarterback to follow the footsteps of Brady and Manning is that guy who already led the Pittsburgh Steelers to a Super Bowl title, quarterback Ben Roethlisberger.
Ben Roethlisberger was second only to Tom Brady in passer rating last season (when he was getting sacked every other play and coming back from a season of devastating injuries). He is the youngest QB to ever win a Super Bowl as well as the only QB to ever have two games with a perfect passer rating.
Last in the list would be Tony Romo of the Dallas Cowboys.
Though he has not accomplished much in his short tenure at the helm of the Dallas Cowboys offense, not to mention all the problems they’ve been having this season, he looks promising. He needs to win a Super Bowl, or at the very least, get the ‘Boys to an NFC championship game before he can be viewed as a dependable quarterback. Winning games in the regular season means nothing if you can’t produce in the post season.
