2009 NFL Football Season Week 13 Betting Picks

This week, we’ll go across the border, in Canada.

Because Week 13 of the 2009 NFL football season will kick off in Toronto where the New York Jets and the Buffalo Bills will renew their AFC East rivalry on Thursday Night Football.

That’s right, the Buffalo Bills, trying to reach out to fans across Lake Ontario, is scheduled to play a total of five contests in Toronto, one per season through 2012. Unfortunately, the experiment did not begin well last year, with many in attendance supporting the opposing team in the Bills’ 16-3 loss to the Miami Dolphins on December 7.

On the verge of four straight losing seasons with a 3-7 mark, the Bills gave their home fans reason to smile with a 31-14 win over Miami last Sunday.

terrell_owensAfter averaging 12.3 points in the previous eight games, Buffalo broke out with 24 unanswered points in the fourth quarter, including a 51-yard touchdown pass from Ryan Fitzpatrick to Terrell Owens, the second time the duo hooked up for a lengthy score in the last two weeks.

As far as the New York Jets are concerned, rookie Mark Sanchez will look to bounce back on Thursday as he has continued to struggle, tossing only two touchdowns against seven interceptions in the last three games. Sanchez was 13 of 17 for 154 yards and just one interception Sunday, enabling the defense to carry the Jets to a 17-6 victory over Carolina to snap a three-game losing streak.

Will that be enough to beat the Bills? We’re giving Mark Sanchez the benefit of the doubt, Jets by three.

On Sunday Night Football, the 10-1 Minnesota Vikings slug it out against the 7-4 Arizona Cardinals.

Brett Favre leads the way for the streaking Vikings, winning their last four assignments by at least 10 points. A 36-10 victory Sunday over the Chicago Bears at the Metrodome gave the Minnesota Vikings a 10-1 record, putting their magic number for clinching the NFC North at two games.

For the Arizona Cardinals, they will still rely on the services of Matt Leinart, who started last Sunday for the first time since 2007, completing 21 of 31 passes for 220 yards. He wasn’t intercepted but he didn’t throw a touchdown either. Leinart led the Cardinals to one touchdown drive, but it would have been the game winner had the defense not let Vince Young lead the Tennessee Titans on a 99-yard touchdown drive as time expired.

Brett Favre will show Matt Leinart how it’s done, Vikings by 14.

Next, Monday Night Football will feature the Baltimore Ravens taking on the Green Bay Packers in a game between two young quarterbacks that is slowly making quite a name for themselves.

Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco might play in this game as his sprained ankle is, as coach John Harbaugh puts it, ”not a major injury.” Flacco said he ”re-rolled” the ankle in the beginning of the second half of Sunday night’s 20-17 overtime victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers. Will he be healthy come Sunday night?

The Green Bay Packers, on the other hand, are coming off a 34-12 victory over the Detroit Lions on Thanksgiving. The Packers are riding on a season-best three-game winning streak and are in the driver’s seat for an NFC wild-card playoff spot with a 7-4 record.

Green Bay’s consecutive wins came in a taxing stretch of 12 days, during which they rebounded from an embarrassing loss to the previously winless Tampa Bay Buccaneers last Nov. 8 and lost Pro Bowl defensive players Al Harris and Aaron Kampman to season-ending knee injuries.

But will that be enough to get past Ray Lewis and the rest of the Ravens defense? I don’t think so. Ravens by three.
