Can Baltimore Ravens earn trip to Super Bowl XLIII?

The Ravens are only a win away from earning the trip to the big dance people.

Thanks to Matt Stover and his 43-yard field goal with 53 seconds left, the Baltimore Ravens earned an improbable 13-10 victory over the Tennessee Titans to stun another sellout crowd at LP Field.Inspired by a timely offense, a stubborn defense and a rare break by the officials, the Ravens became just the second No.6 seed in NFL playoff history to upset a top seed.

The Ravens will now play the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 2009 AFC championship with a spot to Super Bowl XLIII at stake. This is the first time Baltimore advanced to the AFC title game in eight years.

A 48-yard touchdown pass from Baltimore Joe FlaccoRavens rookie quarterback Joe Flacco to Derrick Mason tied the score at 7 before the 23-yarder from Flacco to Todd Heap on third down set up the game-winning field goal in the fourth quarter.Still, the win can’t deny the fact that these Ravens won with a stubborn defense.

After giving up a touchdown in the first quarter, the Ravens allowed the Tennessee Titans to get inside their 40-yard line six more times. These Ravens won with some help from the officials too. In a season in which it seemed as if they never got a break from the officiating crew, the Ravens got a big one in the AFC divisional round. It happened right before Flacco’s 23-yard pass to Heap on the game-winning drive when it was clear that the play clock has already expired before the undrafted rookie QB even had the chance to start the play.

Still, beating the top-seeded Tennessee Titans brought the Ravens to a situation they’ve already been before.

In the 2000 season, the Ravens beat the Titans despite being out-gained 317-134 in total yards and 23-6 in first downs. Today, the Ravens won despite being out-gained 391-211 in total yards and 21-9 in first downs. The difference between the 2000 Ravens and this season’s team came down to the offense stepping up at critical times.

Oh yeah, the 2000 Ravens went on to win the Super Bowl then, in Tampa. Can these Ravens do the same and beat the Pittsburgh Steelers this weekend to earn another trip to the big dance? Stay tuned.
