Eagles visit the Redskins on Monday Night Football

Can both the Eagles and the Redskins keep up with the better half of the NFC East?

That’s what both teams will be hoping for as Week 7 of the 2009 NFL football season concludes at FedEx Field where the Philadelphia Eagles visit the Washington Redskins for a big NFC East rivalry game.

After six weeks, both the Philadelphia Eagles and the Washington Redskins are still playing catch up to the Cowboys and the Giants in the NFC East. Week 6 was tough for both too as the Eagles were shocked by the Raiders 13-9 while the Redskins have once again ”awarded” somebody their first win of the season, giving the Chiefs their first win of the year 14-6.

michael_vickLet’s start with the Philadelphia Eagles. The Eagles were the NFC favorite coming into the season and were supposed to be an offensive juggernaut, yet last week they only got nine points in a humiliating loss to the Raiders.

What’s even more troubling is, they actually have a good running game, it’s just that they choose to not take advantage of it. The Eagles average 4.3 yards per carry but they only average 23.2 attempts per game, which is fourth-fewest in the NFL. The Eagles have invested a lot in running backs such as Brian Westbrook and LeSean McCoy, but the way they’ve been utilizing them in games just baffles me.

The Washington Redskins, on the other hand, had another poor offensive showing as they suffered a 14-6 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs last week. The Redskins offense has only scored an average of 13.2 points per game this year. They have to do something or they’re looking at one long season ahead.

Well, they did do something the last few days but I don’t think this is the solution the Redskins were looking for.

The Washington Redskins stripped head coach Jim Zorn of his play-calling duties, getting Sherm Lewis to direct the offense probably for the rest of the year. Lewis, lured out of retirement two weeks ago to take a job as a consultant, spent 22 years as an assistant but hasn’t been in the NFL since 2004.

Is this the guy the Redskins are hoping to make the difference this season? They could’ve just promoted somebody from their own ranks but NOOO, they had to pick up somebody off the street. Yes, that will sure build some team chemistry alright.

Both teams may be struggling but the Redskins just have waaay more problems this year than what the Eagles have at this point of the season. We’re picking the Eagles, because they haven’t stripped their head coach of his play calling duties yet.
